I'm looking to purchase a new set of irons. I feel I have moved past the beginner stage of the game and my Top Flite irons I purchased as a complete set need to be retired. What are some excellent mid range irons? I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but am competitive with my buddies and want to know I am using proven quality irons. I would like to keep them under $400 (wedges included). I'm open to new and used as long as they are in like new condition.

What are your suggestions?

Wilson staff is often overlooked, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Ci9's, which can be had for 250$ 4-GW new on Amazon. The Di11s are also apparently quite good, but meant for higher handicappers. Both have quite strong lofts, however; they actually have both an approach wedge and a gap wedge! The PW is 44*, GW is 48*, and you'll want at least one wedge above that. The AW is not included in that set, but I'd recommend you buy a wedge or two aftermarket; scoring wedges are a lot better than matching ones imo.

4-GW from that set should be a good start, leaving you with plenty of cash for 2-3 wedges as long as you don't go for premium wedges. I can't really recommend any in particular since they're such a feel thing, but cleveland, titleist, mizuno all offer very nice ones in a wide selection for a decent chunk of money. Definitely get a blade style, preferably forged. Unless you use the club a lot on full shots, the blade design is better for the short game.

There are plenty of other options, but those are solid GI irons.

In My Bag:

Mizuno R12 60.5, black nickel, KBS Wedge X
Odyssey Metal X #1 putter
Bridgestone E5, Adidas samba bag, True Linkswear Stealth

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

It really depends on the state of your game and how much you play. Part of me wants to say screw the cheap knockoffs and get some real clubs, but that may be bad advice.  I really have no idea....

Would agree with posts suggesting Wilson Staff. If you can find a set that's a generation or 2 from the current offering, you should be able to snag a good set well within your price point. Seen lots of posts from guys that play WS, and all seem pretty positive about the quality and playability of their clubs.

In my Sun Mountain 14 Way Stand Bag:

Driver - Ping G30 10.5* : Fairway - Ping G30 18* : Hybrids - Titleist 915H 21* & 915 H 24* : Irons - Mizuno JPX 850 Forged 5 - GW : Wedges, Vokey 54.14, Vokey 58.12 : Putter - Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 or Ping Craz-E-R  : Ball - Bridgestone B330RX, Cart - Cliqgear 3.5

Man, GPPGolf.com just had a sale and the A4R's could be had for $108 shipped. That was 4H, 5-GW. I've got a set and a finer cast set could not be had. They appear to be sold out, but you can find them on Ebay for under $200 easy. The Ci9's are another of my favorites, a little more expensive, but pleasing in every way. If you don't mind used, check into the Taylormade R7's, a more forgiving set you will not find.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
