I've been trying to feel like the clubface is facing the sky on the follow through.  The problem is, it releases and I end up "blocking" the release trying to "reduce clubface rotation".  Long story short, I think I may have injured my left wrist.  Why do so many people say "don't release the club", when even Grant Waite lets his right hand roll over his left in the follow through, reducing the pressure on the left wrist and letting the club rehinge naturally?  It seems like you need to roll and let the toe point up on the follow through.

The right wrist will roll over the left at some point in the swing (P7 - P8?) as it's impossible for it not to. I think the idea of holding off is to remove the timing element involved with trying to "release" through impact, e.g. the old way of trying to draw the ball.

I always try to think of it as "hands low" as in this shot of Mr Hogan:

See, that makes sense to me.  On camera, I get to a similar position as the picture post impact, but from there the club straightens out quickly causing my left wrist to cup and if I swing hard, it snaps the side of my left hand.  It feels like I just karate chopped an oak tree.  I have to either turn the shoulders really quickly post impact or chicken wing to prevent it.  I'd rather roll the right wrist over the left because it's easier.  I think maybe I took all of the advice to not "roll" and "not release the club" too literally.  In reality you need some roll to take pressure off the left wrist.  You just don't want an "active" roll through impact a la A.J. Bonner.  I hope James Hirshfield won't mind me re-posting this pic he came up with:

I think the important part for anyone struggling with this is the quotes around "no roll".  It means relative to the swing path, the clubface is not closing.  It doesn't at all mean the right hand won't roll over the left on the follow through.  If you were to look at Grant face on in that shot, you would see the back of the right palm facing you, not facing the ground.  In fact that's the opposite problem where the club is opening relative to the circle.

I have honestly not worked very dilligently (have in the past, but not recently) on what the hands do post-impact.  In reality that's a key part of the swing to ingrain because if there's a pain point there, your brain takes over and slows it down for you causing other problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

Club will be square to the plane.  "Feel no roll".  Emphasis on feel.  Since the club is swung on an incline plane it "appears" that there is a roll.  Here is a video that might help clear up the terminology.  Hope this helps.

    • Just want to share a quick update with everyone. I went to the range the week before last, even though I took it easy no significant pain occurred just a slight twinge when I swung my #4 hybrid. The most encouraging news was no soreness the next morning. However I think switching back to graphite shafts is definitely gonna happen, my mp15's were fitted with X shafts and having something lighter will help.
