All,

My backspin is off the charts with my driver.  I'm getting 4000+ RPMs on the launch monitor with my current driver.

My driver swing speed is about 95-100 mph.

Any good shaft/head combos that might help with this?  I had a Titleist D3 for a while last year and while it did reduce the spin, I felt like I lost distance with it because the shaft was too heavy and/or stiff.  It was a 72 g shaft.

Any suggestions?

Also, for my irons, should I drop down to a regular flex shaft, or something like a 5.0/5.5 rifle?

If your driver is 4,000 rpm, before I do anything with equipment, I would first have your swing filmed/measured, by a pro.

Confirm the RPM's and then figure out what is causing the backspin. More than likely you are hitting down on the ball and the adjustment may be as simple as moving the ball forward in your stance.

Odds are this is the bigger culprit and not the equipment.

YIKES.......4000 rpm is a distance killer!  It's all about the shaft.....I've been there, done that....believe me.

The BEST fix is testing several different drivers at a retail store that employs both a pro and a launch monitor. Test several drivers and with the pro's assistance, he will help guide you and maximize both RPM & Launch angle so you can achieve your full potential.

For us normal amateur golfers........that's the best way.  It's not like we can test the D3 with 50 different shafts like the pro's can easily do...........

Do some driver testing and start from scratch...............let the numbers to the talking. You cannot guess your way into the correct shaft.......it's all hitting them and seeing the actual numbers.

my 3 cents......

As mentioned above, it's worth have a PGA professional view and explain your swing.  Dealing with 4000+ RPM, the head doesn't really matter. Finding a shaft that better "fits" your swing will be another step in the right direction (i.e. higher kick point = lower launch angle).

Go hit drivers on a launch monitor. Pay close attention to angle of attack. High spin is ok if your launch is really low, maybe not 4000 but it all depends on ball speed, launch angle, backspin and angle of attack. My guess is that if you lost distance with less spin it could be that the launch was lower as well or your contact was not as solid with the D3. Get an idea of what the LM #'s are and we may be able to point you in a better direction.
