I've been Playing Golf for 2 years r:

My current handicap index or average score is 26 :

My typical ball flight is left with driver:

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is:driver issues

Hi everyone. First time post on here but long time reader. I've had trouble for a while now with my driver swing, mostly going left....a lot. I used to come over the top because I was turning my shoulders first on the downswing rather than sliding my hips towards the target. I'm also trying to work on keeping my head behind the ball but I can't get rid of this chicken wing after I've hit the ball, as you can see in the video. Hopefully someone can give me a few pointers. Really appreciate it.

You've got a very strong grip there. If you're hands are returning to a more neutral position at impact, that will close the face of the club and cause the ball to start left. If your swing path is straight or in to out, then ball will also then draw or hook.

When you say 'strong' do you mean my left or right hand? I've had comments before about my right hand needing to be furthur over but a local pro said it was ok. I know that the right hand position can influence the release and the 'chicken wing' on follow through but the pro said it was ok

Meaning your right hand is to far underneath the club, and your left hand is to far over the club. Rotate your left hand a bit, so the top of it is facing more towards the target instead of towards the sky, rotating counter clockwise, and do the same with the right hand.

I will agree that your right hand is way too strong.  In which the club is closing and making the ball go to the left.  I would work on making that right hand a little weaker and see what that does to your ball flight. Your current grip is the picture in the middle at least your right hand.

I videoed myself earlier and slowed it down and found that my hands don't release and I get the chicken wing..........It's something that I don't know how to fix, it doesn't matter wether I change my grip around either, it's still there. The only thing that looked like it stopped my chicken wing was getting my hands in front of the ball, is this right?

You should have the video camera behind you so we can see your swing plane.  But working with what we have, I agree, you have a very strong grip.  If you hold the club in your left hand at your side (arm straight, club head on the ground) you should be holding it so when you look down you only see 2 knuckles.  The "V" that your index finger and your thumb make on your hands should be pointed towards your back shoulder.

Another thing I noticed is you move your head forward during your down swing.  Try keeping your head very still so you stay behind the ball more.  This little bit of a movement coupled with the strong grip is probably what is giving you the big hooks with the driver.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I've begun to change my grip as advised and my balls seem to have a push/fade rather than the hook., which is a huge improvement. It's still early days yet and I realise it'll take a few weeks for the new grip to become comfortable.... I was aware of my head moving and am working on trying to keep my head behind the ball at impact..... Ive been told my swing seems to be on plane now, finally.....I've been coming over the top for quite a while but think I've cracked it now...

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
