Hey guys, just joined the site after looking around in for several days and think it's a great resource to gain knowledge about many topics surrounding golf. I look forward to posting here much more.

I'm getting ready to purchase a new iron set and will be going to hit a few after work tonight. I started playing when I was about 14 with a hand-me-down set. Improved my game a lot but seems like when I went away for college the $$ wasn't there for me to play often. So I started back up my senior year (21) and have been playing ever since. I'm 25 now and 2 years ago bought the Nike Ignite 2 iron set. I didn't do much research and went up to Dick's and saw they were cheap so I pulled the trigger. Those irons that year brought me to about a 18 handicap from the low 20s. I've been playing much more lately and currently am a 12 handicap breaking 80 last year about 5 times. Got my first hole in one last year with these clubs (see avatar) and another eagle from about 130 yds.

I'm looking hard at the Razr x Black irons from Callaway. I will be testing these out tonight. I like the sleek look and several of my friends hit Callaway irons and have nothing but good to say about them. I assume this is a good jump from the Nike Ignite 2's and could get me breaking 80 more often. I was also looking at the RBZ irons as well as the Nike VR's. I don't try to work the ball much (however not opposed to working on it) but I sometimes struggle to get these irons (especially longer irons) to go where I'm aiming . I tend to have a little fade when I hit them correctly which I don't mind if I can do it on a consistent basis.

Just would like some thoughts based on my handicap, if these irons can get me breaking 80 more often.

Any advice would be helpful....

Thanks

I haven' played the RBZ irons but I recently purchased the Taylormade CB irons and i totally love them. You should check them out, they are 2011 models so i got it from edwin watts for 450. They make a muscle cavity which is great too, but my game is not quite there yet.

How are those CB irons with your handicap? I am a 20 and looking to purchase new irons right now I am looking at the Burner 2.0's, would the CB's be better or about the same? As far a Callaway goes I love their irons. I have hit the Razr line and love them but the I don't like the fact that all they offer is uniflex stock shafts. If I'm going to spend $700 on some irons I shouldn't have to upgrade the shafts when I get them. I have hit the RBZ irons as well as the Nike VRS irons and they both feel amazing. I had a slight draw with the 6 irons so I think either one would be good for you with the slight fade you hit and might even straighten that out a little bit. The long irons in both sets thought would be very easy to hit because of the wider soles. I would go somewhere that has a demo set that you can hit and find out what ones work best for you.

My first set was also the Nike Ignites and they are good clubs despite the low price and lack of glory. The Uniflex shafts also magnified my over the top problems as my swing speed grew. I transitioned to a set of Callaway X20 tour with rifle 6.0 and the fade lessened, but I still had the fade or a ugly pull hook when not swinging properly. The truth was, I needed stiffer shafts, but my ugly swing was the main problem and  I work on it every chance I get. The more I work the straighter the ball gets and the distance is where I never dreamed it could be. The market is full of great choices and if you choose the right flex and work on your swing you should improve up to the ability of your game management and short scoring skill. I believe the Nike ignites with stiffer shafts and the swing effort on my part would have worked just as well. I recently switched to DG X-100 shafted irons and wondered if they would be too stiff as my tempo improved and Is topped trying to kill the ball. My swing speed and solid contact percentages keep increasing  with better fundamental technique and I swing much harder with less effort. Choose the set that blows your skirt up. Spending the money for good equipment motivated me, but the improvement was mostly from a better understanding of how I should swing a club. Besides, your handicap is lower than mine as it is.

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
