I was just wondering... If I bought a shaft, say Phenom RIP 70g. It would be at 46" and if I cut it down to suit my 3w length of 43", wouldn't that mean my shaft is now less weighted and even off balanced? How do I buy a shaft for my 3w then? And what do I need to do to bring it from 46" to 43" without compromising the balance of the shaft?

Whats in the bag:

R11s 9* w/ Project X 6.0

R11s 15.5* w/ Project X Black 6.5

Rescue 11 3 Hybrid 18* w/ RIP Phenom

Taylormade TP CB 4-pw w/ Fujikura TP90

Titleist SM3 C.C. 52*7 56*14 60*4

Odessy Metal X from the Tour Van

The stiff RIP Phenom 70g weighs 72g raw at 46".  That shaft is designed to not be tip trimmed, but installed and butt trimmed to length.  The balance comes from a combination of shortening the raw length of the shaft combined with the difference in head weight; fairway metals being heavier than a driver.

Others, like the RIP Beta, and to be installed in a driver with no tip trim, but tipping 1" for fairway metals, then butt trimmed to length.

All depends on the specific shaft, and also if you are looking for a specific CPM out of it.

I'm not sure why Golf Works says not to tip the Phenom for fairways.  Aldila's web site says to tip the RIP Phenom 1" and butt trim to length after that for fairway woods.

Before I went gluing anything up I'd give Aldila's customer service a call and double check.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • Hence your Avatar!😜 I drink a lot of water during the day if I’m playing or exercising. I get cramps otherwise.
    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
