Hi All,

Any swing advice for me here?  Ex baseball player trying desperately to convert to a golfer. I struggle with consistency and staying balanced. I tend to stay back on my back foot especially with the longer clubs in my bag. Also my back foot has a tendency to slip out from under me.

The thing I hear the most often is that I have a pretty smooth takeaway but get way too quick on my downswing;  and that I swing too hard. .  My problem is that when i slow my swing down or try and do a half or 3/4 swing I manipulate the club face too much with my hands and get some disastrous results. Alot of people seem to tell me that it is the six inches between my ears that is a problem too.

I try my best to practice but I just don't know how to practice,  if that makes sense. To clarify it is hard for me to know what I am doing wrong and end up either just losing my confidence or practicing the same bad habits.

Every time I come to the course I am not sure what swing I am going to have that day and it is extremely discouraging. I know I need a routine but my feels change on what I'm doing right or wrong from day to day.

My one swing thought that has been working for me is steady head and stay centered, and when I do that I feel like I do not have to think about any other part of the swing. Obviously I am doing alot of other things wrong.

Would genuinely appreciate any feedback anyone has. I would love to take professional lesson just can't afford them. I have had a couple lessons by people and they have me hitting it pretty good on the range but as soon as I leave I'm not hitting it the same. I know the guy knew alot about the swing but I only gave him $30 for an hour so Im certain he isn't PGA certified. He told me nothing is wrong with my swing and that I just think too much. I liked that he didnt try to fill my head with too much but obviously it isnt working for me.

Again would really appreciate any suggestions or drills I can use to become a better ball striker/ golfer.

Thank you!

The club im using is my P wedge

I've been Playing Golf for: once or twice a month for about 5 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 95-110

My typical ball flight is: straight with mild to moderate tail to the right

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: shank/ slice

Just a quick observation. You are swinging across the line at the top of your swing. This will make it very difficult to make a consistent strike on the ball.

The red line is where your club is pointing and the bottom blue line is your target line/body line. The top blue line is ideally where you want the club to be at the top of your backswing i.e. pointing at target.

Work on gettting the club more in this position at the top of your swing and you'll find it much easier to make consistent strikes.

Other then this you have a pretty decent swing for a 28 handicapper

Thank you for the feedback norrisedgar. Any tips on how to actually achieve this without standing in front of a mirror? Or a feel that I should have? I plan on going to the range today on my lunch break and try and practice this and excited to start working on it.

I have a hard time with aiming as well. I really never trust my alignment so i end up trying to steer the ball halfway through my swing which causes some bad results.

Thank you again for taking the time to write me a reply. I really appreciate it!

Also thanks for the compliment, my high scores are mainly cause my short game is non existent. Usually i have a 4-5 chances per round where I'm on in two with a chance to make par and I either miss a 4 footer or skull or chunk my pitch or chip. It seems like it should be so simple but I find a way to complicate it. Full swings I feel much more comfortable.

Thanks again really appreciate anymore advice you are willing to share.

When I concentrate on keeping my head really steady, i find that it's hard for me to overswing. Maybe just think about making what you feel like is only a 3/4 swing

No probs Tony. The easiest thing you can do is make a backswing, stop at the top and turn and look where the club is pointing. Make sure it's pointing at the target and that is the feeling you want to take into your proper swing

He's not really over swinging but I know what you are getting at. My club goes across the line when I over swing but it is on line when it is parallel to the ground so I'm not really across the line. Tony's problem is that he is very much across the line at parallel so shortening his swing would not help.

Yeah maybe over swing is the wrong term, he's just so strong, I feel like if he could really become more consistent if he made a more compact motion with his PW.

Just came back from the range pretty discouraged.. I know it is going to take some work.  do you think anything in my takeaway has anything to to do with it? like taking it to far inside? outside? I have such a hard time hitting a draw often only do it by luck.

Thanks to you as well pholmes. I would love to be able to swing more compact just not sure when to stop the club or my shoulders.  By strong do you mean with my grip? That is also something I have been working on. I went from the ten finger baseball grip to i guess an interlock.

I think i also need to work on my left wrist as it is not flat at the top. I think that effects my clubface. Also I thnk I cast and come over the top a little bit but i just dont know how to correct it.

Thank you both!

I mean you create a LOT of speed, which is awesome, but what if you thought about maybe giving up ten yards on that wedge, I mean it looks like you have a lot of potential. One thing I've learned around this site, if you watch all of the videos Eric and Mike post, also James, you can answer almost any question you have. I just don't know enough about the swing to give you much more than I did. I do believe If you can think of swinging your wedge a little easier, and saving that hard swing for your driver you may naturally improve your swing. Good luck.

^^^This.  Make slow practice back swings and stop at the top.  Look back at your wrists.  Left should be flat and the right wrist should have extension(backwards bend).  Flatten out the left wrist and that should help the throw from the top.  No sense in looking at the club at the top until you get a feeling for the wrists.  A feeling for this could be you feel like the club face is pointing back down the line away from the target at the top.

I usually don't post on these if you have not posted much elsewhere, so here is to hoping you become part of the TST community.

First I really appreciate both of your guys suggestions. I am sorry if I appear selfish I just didn't think i had much valuable input to bring to the table because my game/ swing is so terrible.

Everyone can contribute. :)

What shot/miss is it you are struggling with? I notice you put shank/slice above your video. Generally these two shots are mutually exclusive, a slice is normally a result of an out to in path and a shank the opposite. You maybe hitting a push slice.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
