Would you switch from stiff to regular (irons only)?

Dear friends,

I have been playing my TM Tour Prefered irons for about 4 years now. Shafts are Dynamic Gold S300.
My tempo is fast, specially in the backswing (trying hard to slow it down), but my ss during the downswing is not fast really, to give you an idea it´s about 98 mph with a 3 wood. The distance I get with a well hit 5 iron is about 165 yards. I hit it pretty straight, medium trajectory (I don´t flip my left wrist but I do not compress the ball either).

When I swing my irons, I don´t feel them heavy, but I have the feel that I don´t get the shaft work because of, probably, lack of ss. I could swing harder but I would ruin my swing.

Having said all this, I guess that in case you don´t have the proper shafts, it is less harmful to play with “stiffer than you need” shafts rather than “softer than you need” shafts, but, Should I consider shifting to regular flex shafts?

I don´t have many options to test some other irons, so your feedback would be very helpful.

Thanks a lot.

I would get on the launch monitor and see which shaft works best for you. It may be more than flex; a lighter shaft might help you also. Your S300 comes in at about 127 grams raw (uncut), at the high end for steel shaft weight.

Dynamic Gold SL (SuperLight) S300 comes in at about 104 grams.

Don't go too light however, or you will lose control and have trouble feeling when you're "at the top."

Also, you might combine a golf lesson with the launch monitor session. If you're quick on the backswing, you may feel a need to "muscle up" a very heavy iron shaft. But, a pro + data can help you find out for sure.

Seems odd that you swing your 3 woods 98mph but only hit your 5 iron 165 yards. If you swung at 98mph with a driver, you'd be fine using stiff shafts.
