Well its a matter of which long irons you have trouble hitting and would like a little more help with. I personally dont like hybrids and would prefer to hit an iron so I usually only take out my 3 iron when I use a hybrid. Most only take out thier 3irons or 4 irons, however more people are now taking out thier 5 and 6 irons too.

Its all a matter of preference really

It's a personal choice when it comes to long irons or hybrids. I used to hit my long irons fairly well, but since I've gone the hybrid route I have to say I like them much better. They are way more forgiving and easier to hit. I also hit them farther than the long irons. If you struggle with any of your long irons, I would replace them. (3,4,5 irons) I have a friend back home that has cut 7 strokes off his handicap by changing to hybrids, the longest iron he uses now is his 6 iron.

The point to replace irons with hybrids or woods is when distance levels off. What i mean by that is: you hit your 5 iron 160, 6 iron 150, 7 iron 140, but your 4 iron is only 165 and your 3 is around the same, that would be the time to get rid of the irons. 5 yards in between clubs is just stupid IMO. The reason you cannot hit the irons as far is because of lack of swing speed. You need to figure out when your distance levels off, and decide for yourself.

Good point, but height and how you use the club matters also. I tend to use my hybrids as trouble clubs out of the rough, second shot par 4s, lay ups on par 5s, and longer par 3s. I hit my old 3 & 4 irons almost as far but lower, and not nearly as well out of the rough. I have a buddy who is only 1 club longer than I, but hits the ball much higher, so he only replaced his 2 iron.

Any thoughts?

Depends on what you have trouble hitting. If you can hit your irons well, don't bother with a hybrid. If you struggle with irons, try to get hybrids instead.

I think this is good advice. This year I replaced my 5 iron with a hybrid. I also replaced all my woods with hybrids. The hybrids are just so easy to hit and I hit them more consistently more often than I did any club they replaced. Having said that, I will add only that I shot my two best rounds ever in the past four weeks ( 81 and 82 ). The strategy of having several hybrids in my bag appears to be working for me. Also, I find the hybrid a brilliant choice for chipping. Often, I am able to use a putting stroke. I have gotten up and down more than a few times around the green using a hybrid. You may wish to replace one long iron with a hybrid, practice and play a bit with it and see how you do. If you like the results, you can then consider the possibilty of replacing other clubs with hybrids. Good luck.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
