Hi Everybody,

Say, I'm curious, what is it in golf that hacks you off most? I mean everything from minor offenses to downright unpardonable sins. A sampling from me:

1) My foursome, who doesn't think it has to keep with the group ahead.

2) Practice range mats that feel like concrete.

3) Setting my chipping wedge on the green's morning dew.

4) "Gimmicky" holes.

5) Too many clubs, balls, putters, hats, etc. to choose from.

6) Too many people taking up the game.

There. That's a few of mine. Now I feel better.
I'd be curious to hear yours.

Cheers!

My number 1:

-slow golfers... i am probably too impatient to play golf (but somehow i'm addicted to it)

2.) when people don't fix their ball marks and divots

3.) when someone in my foursome has a poor attitude, and brings down the group because they are playing bad

a bad day on the golf course is always better than a good day at work."

Slow play.

I think it causes or at least aggravates all of golf's other problems (too expensive because the golf course can't get enough people on the course, family obligations because it's difficult to spend seven hours elsewhere, and bad attitudes and unfriendly environment created by irritated golfers, because it's so damn slow.)

Fixing pitch marks is annoying (I just take relief from especially bad ones that are impossible to fix), but it doesn't really set off a trigger.

Since it's winter, only one course is open: Pioneer (others: Willows and Fox Run). Problem is, it's where all the kids play (a junior membership only allows under 18's to play that one course, and walking only - I am assuming no carts for insurance liabilities). And they don't even attempt to rake the bunkers. It's annoying when my ball lands in a really deep footprint.

Nothing more than slow play, it kills ur pace of play and tests ur patience. I played with a guy who looked up so many times before he putted I ended up counting 14 times which is far too high. It makes ur mind vary from where you should be to the other player

Seconded. I'm sick and tired of watching a slow group in front become, if it's possible, even slower just because the guy behind you is under 30. I'm not sure if it's arrogance, just plain being rude, or "a determination to teach the young whippersnapper behind you his place", or something like that.

1. slow play
2. teaching someone how to hit the ball with people waiting behind you.
(they always seem to show up on the weekends)
3. people not fixing ball marks
4. people waiting to hit a 285 yd shot when they can only hit a 200yd shot from the tee.

My biggest pet peeve is people playing from tee boxes that too far back for their skills. I feel/think/believe that the tee markers should be based on handicap, not age or sex. Weekend golfers would play faster and enjoy their game more if they would move up one tee box. Weekender's from the blues/blacks/tips (whatever color your course uses) that have to literally crush their drive to get to the fairway and then mash their three wood to barely get to the 150 yard marker for their third shot are only slowing everyone else down.

You shouldn't be hitting from the tips unless you are a single digit handicapper, 10-18 from the middle tees and above 18-20 should play from the forward tees, in my opinion. The golfer would enjoy himself/herself much more, develop their game to take it to the next level and speed up play.

My biggest pet peeve is general rudeness of non members at my course, yes you are a society, no, no one here likes you or wants you here, so if your rude why does it surprise you when I hit balls at you..... so I change my mind, I just hate societies in general!

The thing I hate to see most on a golf course is ignorance and disrespect. What I mainly mean by this is things such as not paying attention to peoples putting line and not fixing ball marks. These are things that are inexcusable and caused by ignorance. I also hate people sho proclaim that they cant play fast because they have a slow routine. SLow play results from not managing yourself and your equipment on the course, not your pre-shot routine.

3) Setting my chipping wedge on the green's morning dew.

Surprised no one commented on this. Just stick a tee in the ground and set the grip on the tee. Problem solved.

i don't mind societies on my home course - without them the club wouldn't be able to balance the books. I play in a society too and am grateful for clubs to let us play at the weekend. There are some problems with society golf - like slow/bad play and pitchmarks but i find that the members of my course are bigger culprits for these factors.

slow play kills the game - my club has sent out warning to people recently (following complaints).

but i can deal with slow play/societies/pitchmarks (i dont see pitchmarks ever disappearing as a problem...)

the one thing that kills me is cheating. i play with a guy who i consider a friend. has a "handicap" of 2. I consider myself an honest person and player, i play off 5, he's never had a better score than me and we play a lot together. I've won big tournaments for my category yet he didn't when he was off >5. If he takes 7 on a hole he'll say he had a bogey or a 6. At the end of a round he'll come out with 4 over when it's more like 7/8.

He's never got cut outside his home course, i've played with him there and he's handed cards in (without me signing them! - prob forged a signature) and he's won medals there. He's going to enter some major amateur events this year which i cannot get into with my handicap. I aim to get to 2/3 this year - it'll annoy me when he gets into these competitions and I don't.

There are other people like this out there too - i play with some top amateurs here and i've heard stories. It's sick.

I think of it this way.

There are things that bug us that you cannot attach to a person present (e.g. unrepaired ball marks, dewy grass) then there are things you can attach to a person present (e.g. slow play, jingling change in pocket).

From a competitive perspective I have found I have to ignore the latter because it takes you out of your game if you're bothered by something. These things only later serve as an excuse or self-fulfilled prophecy. The former I do my best to deal with, despite their annoyance. That is, I'll fix the ball marks as habit on every green, regardless of their 'age'. And I always have a towel with me on green which solves the dewy grass issue.

Golf is terribly hard enough without adding anything else to the equation.

1. I think "slow play" wins as this forum's # 1 pet peeve, hands down. And I'll have to agree wholeheartedly. I don't even care if you're playing from the tips as a 15 handicap. You should still be able to play in 4 hours or less (and that's a foursome). Just don't re-tee every time you hit a bad shot....grab your crap and get moving....no excuse for a round longer than 4:30, period.

2. It's a hot day, I'm struggling a bit, I hit my best shot of the day and get a bad break and end up in a bunker. Upset, but hey, I made pure contact. I walk up to the bunker and it looks like the group in front of me did freaking snow angels in there or had a wrestling match and my ball has the crappiest lie with virtually no chance of saving par. Rake the f'n bunkers! I'm not asking for a 20 minute groundskeeper job, just make it level, that's all. And when you're done, make sure that the rakes are spread evenly around them. Big pet peeve to walk up alongside a 40 yard long bunker and see no rakes on my side and four on the other side. Common courtesy is all I'm asking for here.

3. Related to # 1, a course with one or two marshalls driving all over the place and the round still takes five hours. If you're a marshall, that means you speed up play. It doesn't mean you drive around looking for balls in the trees and hey, you get free golf after 3pm. Do your job! Don't pull up on me on my back swing and watch all four of us hit, only to drive right by the sixsome in front of me that has two holes empty in front of them.

4. I'm just getting started, but have to run to brunch....hold my spot!

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
