bottom of the club doesn't have to lay flat at address,only when striking the ball does it need to be flat

I use a Cleveland classic #1 but after playing with a guy this past Sunday who used a putter that he made in his garage (hideous looking)and draining putt after putt after putt after putt.....you get the picture.Obviously it's the person and not the putter,and I understand about people saying how good their putter is but no way would I pay a rediculous amount of money for something that's gonna pay so little dividends
