Since “It Happened”

It’s been over two years since “It Happened”, and I finally had surgery on my knee yesterday. They did a scope where they removed some arthritis and then performed microfracture surgery. They drill a bunch of holes through the cartridge into the bone to create a super clot causing it to heal. I can’t put any weight on it for 6-8 weeks which stinks, but I should be ready before the snow melts. He said I will eventually need knee replacement, but this will kick the cam down the road.
Thankfully there is golf on tv to watch.

Why the two years in between? COVID? General healing before surgery?

It was scheduled for last December but was cancelled because I caught COVID. Afterwards I had a big upgrade project at work. Then my dad had lung cancer surgery and other health issues that kept him going from hospital to care facility. He’s finally home and doing well. I have another big project, but I didn’t want to put this off any longer. That’s the short version.

My friend had me ask my surgeon if he could rewire my knee to add 20 yards to my drive. I asked, but it didn’t sound too promising.

He should be able to put some jumper cables in there. Give him a quick lesson on GRF and maybe he'll help you be more explosive.

Get well soon, Shane! It sounds like you’re interested in golf again which is a step in the right direction 😃

Golf is funny like that. After spending so much time under medical care this past year, all my old man is talking about now is getting g back out to the golf course. I think we all need a 12 step program.

I would if I had the slightest clue what that is. 🤣

I have been even though it’s a pain to not put any weight on it. One area of concern is a numb spot on the ball of my left foot. Hopefully it’s temporary.

I went to the doc for my 6week follow-up last week. What was originally “sold” to me as 6-8 week recovery is now sounding like six months. I can only put 25 lbs of weight on it for 3 weeks, then 50 for the next three, etc. needless to say, any early season golf / practice is not going to happen. Hopefully physical therapy gets approved quickly so I can get that going.

They now have a device that will do some physical therapy for you while sitting on the couch.   My older friends are looking forward to golf this spring after double knee replacements.

Yea this sounds about right. You'll get there! I hope you get approved for it ASAP.

I did have a CPM machine for 3 weeks that bent / straightened my leg. Workers Comp did not approve its use after 3 weeks even though my doctor recommended it.

Thanks! I know I will. He did say I could do a stationary bike, so I’ll be hitting the gym for some light peddling.

I am now in week 12 of "crutching" around. It seems like forever ago when I could just get up and walk across the room. I got up from my chair one day a few weeks ago and took a step without thinking about it. Thankfully I was able to catch myself on the ottoman before face-planting.

Now for the bright side. I am off weight restriction next Wednesday as I can tolerate it, and I can start physical therapy. I'm not sure how long it's going to be before I can walk without assistance, but I'm going to give it my all without over-doing it. It is definitely going to be a balancing act.

It's getting tougher since we are starting to have warmer weather. We had a record high of 71* here. It was nice to know that my dad was heading to the golf course to play a few holes since he missed all of last year due to medical issues. That gives me hope.
