Done the "sitting behind a computer all day" - i'd do it again but considering a career in golf...

Not necessarily Pro - though i'd like to be a teacher one day. Do you have a job/career in golf? Does it pay the bills? I finish up college in May and am looking for a job in golf.

I've been looking at ad's and golf websites - seen some opportunities but mostly seasonal stuff starting in March (i'm in college till May).

Does anyone have a job in golf apart from the pro's here? what do you do? and Pros - how do you find your career?

what about something in the business of golf? club manager? work for a golf company?

I could see how it would be hard to pay the bills just starting off teaching.

Just curious - what's your major? If you're in a physical engineering discipline (materials science and mechanical engineering come to mind immediately), you might apply to the R&D; labs of the golf companies. If you're in economics, you might apply to their marketing departments.

I see you're in Ireland so I don't know whether this is applicable or not, but here in the states the PGA runs it's PGA/PGM program . It's pretty much getting yourself certified to work as a professional in the golf business, like you would with Microsoft programming or something of the like. Going thorugh this program would typically land you a job as a Head Pro/Director of Golf. But it can also open up opportunities in other avenues.

As far as my job, I'm content. The money isn't great, but, I'm still just an assistant, so that's to be expected. There are plaenty of perks that come along with working at a club, free golf, free clubs, free balls, networking with members. This is not where I see myself finishing my career. I am using the mentioned perks to practice as hard as I can to make a career for myself playing for a paycheck. That being said, working at a club is the best job I've ever had. Yes, I've made more money at other jobs, but, being here there has never been a day that I've regreted having to come to work.

I have a BA degree in Economics and Finance, I worked for Merrill Lynch for a year and doing a MA in Financial Engineering at the moment (when i'm not playing golf). The business aspect of golfing (marketing/merchandising/sales) is something i'll look into.

That PGA/PGM Programme looks great - i'll look into it but I think I need to start working sooner rather than later!

A buddy of mine just told me that the Irish National Academy (Golfing Union or Ireland HQ) are looking for someone to work part-time at the academy/driving range. It'll be part time for starters but if i can get it, i'll be able to stay out of an office for the summer!

Thanks for the info guys - at the moment i'd love to end up doing what you do Ben - if i can get this job i'll see if I could even do it for a year and work on my golf game (and pay off my debts!)
