I've been involved team match play over the past 6 weeks. Two of the courses were private Country Clubs which meant I only got to play one practice round. To prepare for them I used Google Earth ( free download is available ) to map out every hole. The ruler feature can be set to 'yards' which allowed me to determine optimal tee shot landing zones, hazards, etc. The tilt feature showed slopes however it's not as accurate as it needs to be for golf.

I printed off two holes per page (landscape), cut them all in half and created my own booklet to use during the practice round for notes and ultimately, the matches. Very cool tool and kinda fun to look at your own course.

Thanks for the tip. Now I have a good reason to learn how to use Google Earth.

Cool.
You'll have to copy/paste the Google Earth images as screenshots into something you can crop images with (I think you can do this in Word using their drawing tools).
I use SnagIt.

Cool.

Thanks. I wasn't having much luck saving directly from the application.

I use Irfanview. It's free. Screengrab 1.0 is also free.

I use it on courses i am unfamiliar with.

I use GoogleEarth. Its great. It lets your zoom in and use the ruler function.

Althought most courses will have a yardage indicator. Its good to use to find distance indicators off dog-legs etc.

its great.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I asked my buddy and he got the images off Google earth. But what he did then was to create a circular grid extending out from the middle of the green, and from this he is able to read quiet accuratly to +/- 5 yards his exact distance from the centre of the green.
So if an image is not illegal is it illegal to have such detailed distances on it?
I know I would use this if it was legit but I would not consider it otherwise.

Just to give you all a heads up on how I constructed the photo...

Before you save the image you should do a couple of things...

First, I find spots on the fairway where I typically hit my drives...So I marked spots of 230-250yds in an around the fairway off the tee I typically use...

Then I place a "marker" in that spot using the distance as the label.

THEN I saved the image, because it will also save ther markers.

I then used Photoshop to crop, cut, and organize the green, add some lines, or indicate some additional information.

Save as a .jpg and you are good to go. The nice thing about Photoshop is that I can then print these in a borderless 4x6 format. Makes for a handly little book.

During my next round, I will be taking my GPS unit and marking the tee boxes...then I will upload these waypoints to Google earth for exact distances for each tee.

Good luck.

I think this question has already been answered for you. There is nothing wrong with keeping accurate yardage readings. It will still be no different than a yardage book.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
