Hi All,

One of my goals with my golf is to get to a good enough standard to be able to go on trips with friends and competently play any course we may visit. I have no intention of playing competitive golf tournaments or even gaining a handicap. I just want to enjoy myself.

Im starting to think about my 40th birthday in 4 years and how Id like to go away with my wife some friends and play some golf in a resort. Im thinking a couple of rounds with the boys at a resort in Thailand, Vietnam or Bali while the girls relax.

What would you recommend is a satisfactory standard for a trip like this? At the moment I go around at about 100.

It does not matter to me how good (or bad) one is with golf, as long as he/she does not hold up my game. So, I’d say have fun and enjoy your time on the course - just be mindful of your pace, play from the correct tees and pick up/move on when necessary.

Most courses only require that you have the money to pay the fees.  The Old Course in St. Andrews Scotland also requires male players to have a 24 handicap or lower in order to play.  Using that as a standard, one should be able to shoot in the 90's about half the time.  Beyond that, I would say you should be proficient enough to not wildly drive the ball all over the place (most of the time).  Also, maintain a good attitude, play promptly and pickup on holes once you hit 9 or 10 shots.  Do that and you are welcome to play in my and most other's group any time.

Not sure if many of us will feel comfortable with our game. I backed out of a pro-am about 6 or 7 years ago because I did not feel that my game was where I wanted it to be. I have consistently raised the bar on where I  feel content with my game. Breaking 80; shooting low 80's consistently; breaking 80 25 to 30% of the time out. Now I am breaking 80 40% of the time and still don't feel competent. Now I feel I should be able to be mid to low 70's consistently with a rarity of rising above 80.

My advice is to go on your trip soon and enjoy yourself as you may never be satisfied with your game.

PS. I don't have a swing thread yet because I sense that my swing looks like an out of shape, middle-aged man being tasered.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
