That paper really doesn't answer the questions other than don't buy refurbished or refinished balls. A while back one of the magazines submerged balls for 6 months and then hit them. A 2 piece ball lost 8 yards while a 3 piece lost almost 15. It is totally unclear what happens if the balls would have been dried out for a month before being hit. I would expect some performance change but I have no clue what it would be.

The used ball guys put out papers like

I put about as much faith in those studies as I do the ones by golf ball makers. None

Personally I play used balls for practice/casual rounds and bust out the new ones for league play.

Meh.

Until my game gets good enough to justify $40/dozen new balls I'll stick with using used ones.

I dont want to put $8 in golf balls in the pond or under a mound of leaves every time I golf.

I pay $2 a dozen at the range but he's raising it to $4 next spring. And this is for random range balls, nothing has been sorted or graded. I'll definitely be giving Knetgolf some business when I run out.

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
    • That depends what you do within those two.  Are they your only options?   Check out Fit for Golf if you get a moment.  It's linked on the sidebar;  I did it for two years, stopped for a really bad reason, and I plan to get back to it soon.   Mike Carroll also has a great free podcast about a lot of topics in golf fitness.
    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
