currently playing project x flighted 5.5s in my irons, but they're too stiff. looking for something that will hit the ball higher, as i currently hit the ball VERY low. will dropping to 5.0 flighted make a significant difference, or should i just get the HL's instead? what are the differences between the flighted and the HL? do the HL's spin alot (i dont want something with too much spin, as i live in hawaii where its always windy)

I just want to make sure, you are asking for two things. Do you want a softer flex or a different ball flight? I don't recommend using flex to alter ball flight.

Project X's are made to hit a lower ball. Read this thread for more information on [URL="

i want a higher ball flight because it hit the ball low. however, i feel that this is mainly due to me using a shaft that is too stiff. im wondering if it is better for me to drop a flex and stay with the same shaft, or drop a flex and go to a higher launching shaft

best to drop a flex and look at the high launch shafts if they are still available in the PX shaft line. other good options >> DG SL high launch, but droppping a flex is a great start- but the the PX flighted really only help the long irons get better launch. after the 5 iron they are really a stock set of PX's.

This is due to the shaft itself more than the flex. You are already using PX flighted shafts which means your 3 & 4 irons are already HL versions, so if you are not happy with these then chances are the Project X's may not be a good fit. If you still like that feel then use a standard set of Rifles or look at something in the True Temper variety. Seeing a fitter and using a launch monitor can help a lot in this situation.

Again, I don't recommend that people change their ball flight by using a different flex . Because not only will it affect the ball flight but your accuracy. So I recommend that you use the flex that fits your swing speed and tempo, then find a shaft than meets your desired ball flight.

See my point above about dropping flex.

Also you are partially correct about the flighted set.
  • Long irons (2, 3, 4) have a lower kick point for higher ball flight, easier launch and greater distance.
  • Mid irons (5, 6, 7) are standard shafts.
  • Short irons (8, 9, P) have a higher kick point for a lower trajectory, greater accuracy and control.

so are the 3,4,and 5 flighted similar to the project X HL's?

Yes your 3 and 4 irons are. The 5 iron is a regular flight.

i mentioned dropping a flex for the main reason that many people go too much when getting rifles and expecially project x. see your point and concern.. just with the PX's playing firmer/stiffer already a step down may be an easier swing. all in all - good info on the subject...

Main reason people get too stiff a flex in rifles isn't the shaft itself but rather the installation. Many people think they can install a 5.5 shaft into any club head it expect it to play as a 5.5 BUT the club maker should take into consideration the actual club head the shaft is being installed in. Perfect example a Ping iron vs a Callaway iron, the Callaway will play much stiffer than the Ping because of the shorter hosel and bore-thru.

This is why I whole heartedly recommend visiting a Certified Rifle Center to have Rifle shafts installed. (Be sure to speak to the person that is actually certified, technically the certification goes to an individual not the whole staff)

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
