I see the term Low Handicapper and High Handicapper thrown around a lot on this forum, but never any definitions. Can it be defined ?

Golf Digest says that the average score for all rounds is 96.

What numbers would you assign to Low, Mid and High Handicappers ?

I would call anyone with a handicap of 20 or above a high handicapper.

I would call anyone with a handicap of 10 or above a mid handicapper, unless they were a high handicapper. I would call anyone with a handicap of 0.1 or above a low handicapper, unless they were a mid or high handicapper. I would call a scratch or better player just that.

I usually think of a low as anyone in single digits.

What do you mean, unless...?

If someone was a 11.0 last year, then worked their way to an 8.4 this year, you would still call them a mid-capper because they "were" a mid-capper before? I'm not sure I follow.

Unless you shoot over a 20, in which case you are a high handicapper.

He wasn't trying to say that your old handicap matters, only that you are a mid handi until you reach the 20 mark.


On the note of 20/25 being a "high handicapper". Granted, I don't play with pros... and most of the people on a municipal course aren't trying for exemptions...

But a 20 score is equal (roughly) to a bogey (literally, +1 every hole) golfer... and in my experience, a bogey golfer is not a high handicapper.

I would consider my handicap in the high range... but I think after you start bogey'ing or better every hole... you shouldn't be classified as a "high handicapper" anymore.

Probably. I guess I'm not yet in the mode of thinking of myself as a mid-handicapper. Give me a few months until I'm squarely there

By 'handicap', I assume you all mean 'handicap index '? Assuming so... Joe Golfer carries a 20.0 Index. At his par 72 home course he likes to play from two sets of tees. The whites have a slope of 120, giving him a course handicap of 21. The blues have a slope of 130, giving him a course handicap of 23. He could shoot a 93 from the whites or a 95 from the blues for a net par. Would you still consider Joe a "mid-capper"?

Just personal opinion, but if you can break 100, playing by the rules, on a course with a slope of 130, you're not a high handicapper. You have to be able to put the ball in play and get it up and down occasionally to do that.

      I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
