Does titanium or stainless steel get softer over time?

A golfing buddy said it’s not good to buy a used set of woods because the metal alloys get softer over time from repeated ball striking. I’ve also heard this same thing about aluminum baseball bats.
Anyone know if this is true?

NAAAAAAAAAWT True---Frank Thomas the technical director of the USGA said while on the Golf Channel that a driver can be called slightly worn after 10,000 hits. So maybe if you hit the thing 100,000 times you can think about getting a new driver. The metal is really durable on everything now

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

A lot of people change their driver once every two or three years so they probably wouldn't notice any metallic wear. They would notice some cosmetic wear, though. It'd take a while to hit your driver 100,000 times much less 10,000 times!

Actually, it’s not uncommon to hear of ambitious players hitting 1,000 balls a day. I’m sure it isn’t with the same club, but it could add up.
So, don’t buy a used club from a scratch golfer!?
