My brother is 76 and struggling with his taylormade r7 irons, the iron heads are good but the shafts too strong for him to control. I bought a set of used Srixon I-601 4-sw to try and make a set he could play with, his country golf club has 8-9 sets left by members that replaced them with new iron sets. So he got 4 sets of irons for me to mix and match to see if I could get him a set, finished up with these I-601s with ladies steel shafts that he hits a nice draw with!!!

I’m really happy with the results which is I guess more good luck than good management, yeah I’m bragging about it but it’s my first attempt at club making lol. I promise I won’t give up my day job lol, it’s very satisfying to do that for my brother and now I’m still working on sorting my driver…

What do you mean by "the shafts are too strong for him to control"?

Usually stiffer shafts go straighter (but lower, and shorter), and a shaft that is too flexible will be tough to control.

Back in the day...a set featured a low, medium, and high trajectory club.  It did not matter what they were called.  These days we assign numbers to clubs and rate them according to distance.  This is not an improvement.  As the old saying goes...it isn't how...it's how many.  What has been lost is the ability to envision what will happen.  It really doesn't matter what club you use to cover a specific distance...it is what the ball does once it gets there.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

Some guys use stiff shafts but when you age you need reg or senior shafts, just worked out ladies shafts are good for him. All about what works for each individual, easy to understand I thought...

Yeah the distance gets shorter as you age and you get weaker, no shame if you hit a 6 now instead of a 8.. cheers

I asked you because you said they were "too strong to control" and that's the "opposite" of what most people will say: a flexible shaft (while helping players hit it farther) is tougher to control. Stiffer shafts control the ball more - you get a more consistent height and lateral dispersion is lower.

Well imho it works either way, the swing speed dictates which flex works best for each individual golfer. There’s as many reasons why as there’s players....

Think fishing rods and lure/line weight.  It is the same concept.

@Colins69 Do you have a preferred fishing method?

My fave is fresh water...flies, plastic, that sort of thing.  Small bodies of water.  I have fished in the ocean...but that is a different box of tackle.  Knot saying eye dew knot enjoy it...butt that is a different kettle of ish.

Yeah sometimes I like to draw butt a fade is good enough to change it UP.
