Getting the chance to play Pikewood National today outside Morgantown WV.  Supposed to be the second hardest course in the US.  Walking course only, supposed to be 7-8 mile walk.

Pikewood National Golf Club

This is one of the best courses that I have played, very long but very fair.

The views were spectacular and the course was in awesome shape for November, hoping to get invited back in late spring or early summer.  Ranked No. 40 (Golf Digest) of best US courses, even from the forward tees this course is a beast, 7,100 Yds the day we played it, so there were lots of long irons and hybrids to the holes.  There were no other tees, back and forward were it.  The landing areas luckily were generous, greens were rather large, but it was a lot of work winding your way around this course. The shortest iron I hit into any green (other than Par 3) was a 7 iron and that was only once.

We were also the only group on the course and we each had our own caddie, but the front 9 was a very tough walk, total walking course, no carts anywhere.  There were lots of long traverses from green to next tee.  First time I remember walking on a golf path that had multiple switchbacks in them to go down the mountain. From the bottom of the course to the top of the course, was about 500 feet of elevation change.

The following pictures are Hole No. 5 shortest Par 3 over a small pond, with a waterfall behind it.  Hope No. 12, which is a 185 Yd Par 3 over a ravine and No. 17, Par 5 with a pond in front, reachable in two from the forward tees, although I didn't got for it, as the trees on the right were impeding my draw.

Final Score

44-40-84 - Had 5 3-Putts, 2 doubles (not the 3-putts), one penalty stroke and too many long irons and hybrids into the greens, but really enjoyable none the less.

    • Something just popped into my head, based on your mention of the folks who "know the rules" but are generally wrong.  Another comment I read was "the Rules ALWAYS said.....".  When I come across those I often go to  www.ruleshistory.com to see if the rules ever said that.  You can find every (almost?) version of the rules since the first set in 1744.  Its fun to return to the conversation and say "You're a little bit right, the rules said that at one time, but that changed in 1984.  You've been playing under the wrong rule for 40 years!"
    • Hi, checking back in to see if any St. Louis area golfers get together for a round or three during the year.  I have recently dropped my membership in a local league this year to work on my game and meet other people.  I would love to hear from anyone that would be interested in meeting for a round in the St. Louis area.   Rick
