For my birthday I was given 4 dozen Pro V1's that were bought at a local used golf ball warehouse. The ones that I recieved were $18 per dozen and were considered "A" quality balls. I can't go wrong paying this price for Pro V1's but I wanted to know if it would be smarter to be playing cheaper new golf balls or these used Pro V1's. From my understanding these balls come are removed from the water, and I always have wondered if that affects ball flight/quality. I could also consider purchasing new Pro V1's but at $45 a dozen that sounds absurd. I also did notice that on probably 70% of the balls there is a slight discoloration but the quality is perfect. I will probably use up these balls and then start purchasing a mid-quality ball. I should probably consider using my Maxfli Noodle's that I purchased about 6 months ago and have not opened yet.

The balls can take in water and can become discolored. For this reason I wouldn't buy balls that have been sitting in ponds. Maybe for a couple days but for a season or two.. meh.. would rather use something new and cheaper.
People might try to say "but the Pro V1 is designed to not absorb any water and it is the best there ever will be". But this is of course not true. I actually made a net and fished out a pond for balls at our course and sold them to the course for range balls. That was about all they were good for. I tried to play a couple of the Pro V1's but they felt heavier and it wasn't worth it.

Most used ball sellers I have seen have a A (worst) - AAAA (best) condition scale. But who knows, the place that sold those balls may rate theirs A - D. I would say play the best of the bunch and use the rest to practice chipping in the back yard.

you can buy reconditioned pro vs that have been 'painted'-but im not sure about buying those. Theres something to be said of going out on the course when its quiet looking for balls..theres nothing better than finding a balata in a bush in good condition, taking it home and cleaning it..a good days work!

Used ball condition scales can vary greatly from seller to seller. Some that use the A-AAAA system even add random + signs to add to the confusion.

$18/dz does sound a little steep for the lowest quality ball though. I assume it's lowest quality because I don't think discoloration is considered 'best' quality. You can probably find mint pro v's for not too much more if you look hard enough.

I have also heard good things about lostgolfballs.com. I have never used them because knetgolf.com has yet to let me down. I started buying used balls there when they were offering free rounds with purchase on ebay. Now, I think they give free hats, but I've found their quality to be superb.

I would've included this in my previous post, but I am new and wasn't sure about any rules against referencing specific vendors and pricing.

lost golf balls are big business. Companies buy the rights to dive in lakes and the divers go deep in search of treasure... the rules of golf state that any ball on the course is the property of the golf club-thats why theres money in it!

I just bought 36 pro v1's in AAA condition from lostgolfballs via ebay and they came in 2 days in course playable condition. I bought them for chipping thinking they wouldn't be that great but I would play these on the course any day of the week.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
