They said a number of things that went against what a lot of people were commonly taught.

Like what? Weight forward throughout the swing? That “went against” what some people were taught, and that’s a terrible piece of advice unless you’re chipping. “Going against” doesn’t make it right. Moreover, “what a lot of people were commonly taught” is a broad generalization. Your statement is hard to argue or even defend due to its general nature.

I'd suggest you weren't necessarily doing it "correctly."

I did the best I could under the direction of my instructor. I hit the ball pretty solid, but low draws are hard to play with once you get past  5i.

PGA Tour players move their heads backward less than an inch from setup to the top of the backswing.

Perhaps the average today’s players do. I prefer more freedom off the ball and hinging the club head up more. But that’s just my preference. Maybe I wasn’t the best student, and I quit too early. Until I quit going, I bought in and only took his advice. I worked on his drills at home and went slow. I sent him video and all that. My swing looked good when I was with him and it was consistent. I didn’t look for quick tips or listen to buddies saying things; I just went off his teaching, to the best I could. I went and paid good money for a year on these lessons. I went mostly monthly, but if I got into trouble I’d go back. I just like what I’m doing now better.

That's not what this topic is about, so I'll be brief:

  • They stressed the proper ball flight laws. They weren't the first, but they did.
  • They talked about the trail knee extending. Not the first to do so.
  • They talked about the hips sliding forward as a part of the weight transfer. Not the first to do so, but like the above, very much against what a lot of people were saying.
  • They talked about how the spine extended and bent left. Not the first, but also against what a lot of people said.

Sorry, where did I say that again? I didn't? Oh, I see.

No, it isn't. Maybe it's hard for you to argue, but I'm not really going to dumb it down for ya. 😄

Again, you likely weren't doing it correctly. You can hit the ball plenty high with an S&T swing.

What does "hinging the club head up more" have to do with swaying or moving laterally back in the backswing? Post your swing; update your Member Swing topic. Feel ain't real.

I think the "hands in" pair of words may have ultimately caused more problems than it solved

This messed me up good, but there's really no one to blame but myself as I was trying to do things without an instructor.

Wow, I know I'm waaay late to the party but I just had a chance to start checking out the daily practice plan challenge. What a treasure trove and an excellent reference. Well done; I subscribed on the spot. 👍

    • Day 133: did a stack session.
    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
