middle of next month I am playing two day tournament in Bend, OR. After the Saturday round, driving towards Palm Springs. Have plenty of time to get there so thinking I will drive, depending on my tee time Saturday, somewhere between 4 and 8 hours Saturday and find a place to stay.  Sunday morning probably drive 3-6 hours, then stop and play a mid-day round somewhere on I-5 before going the rest of the way.

On the way to Palm Springs there are a couple ways I could go...one would be bouncing through Redding/Sacramento etc on I-5. Any recommended courses that fit that time frame? Other option would be driving to Reno for some Desert golf.

On the return trip will be going Palm Springs to Portland, probably leave at some point Friday, stop for mid-day round, then somewhere Saturday again mid-dayish.

I have a vague recollection of a stay and play place somewhere between Redding and Sacramento that was right on I-5 but cannot remember the name of it.  Was pretty affordable and, as a mediocre golfer, I am likely to play a decent but cheap course over a spendy one. Not real likely to play a hundred dollar round, especially when doing something like a "stretch the legs, break up the drive" round...

thoughts?

Hi there, we just did that drive a few months ago over the Christmas holiday. We stayed in Redding both ways. I would recommend staying in Sacramento on the way down and Redding on the way back. Sacramento gets you closer for the second leg. Redding to Palm Springs is a trek on the way there, just felt like we were driving forever. Also Sacramento has a number of golf courses. My recommendation would be Haggin Oaks, and if your willing to get a little off the beaten track I've heard Granite Bay is nice (not played it).

On the way back Fresno might have some golf offerings. Maybe @Golfingdad could recommend one there.

A better golfing choice would be the 101, of course that would be a MUCH longer drive.

I do Portland to SD every Christmas. Agreed Redding is too far from Palm Springs. Super long day to drive and play a round. Way down I'd stay in Sac and then I'd do a jaunt onto the 101. It only adds 50m of driving to angle down to San Jose from north of Sac and then take the 101 from there to Paso Robles before going back east to the 5. I'm sure there are plenty of nice courses off the 101 from Salinas to Paso Robles. One I've played that's really excellent is Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles. Sac -> Hunter Ranch -> Palm Springs would be a solid day.

If you're gonna stop twice on the way back maybe play somewhere in around LA on Friday? It's nothing to write home about, but one course you wouldn't expect to be recommended that you might consider is DeBell. I mention it because it'll be right off the freeway as you drive through Burbank. Public course. Nothing crazy special. I just think it's fun because it's up on the side of the mountain. Lots of short holes with crazy curves. If you're willing to add a little extra to the drive, Rustic Canyon and Malibu Golf course are both fun and public.

Great recommendation here. Hunter Ranch is a great choice.

How about The Reserve at Spanos Park?  Just north of Stockton right on I-5, that might work for timing?  In Sacramento, I also see Bing Maloney and Teal Bend both close to I-5.

I wouldn't recommend making a detour towards Fresno - really no reason to lengthen a trip to get through there unless you planned on going to Yosemite or Kings Canyon / Sequoia as well.

thanks everyone. I have a notebook I am working on alternate routes. Have all the course mentioned above written in.

As the plan develops I think I am going to look at courses 4-6 hours apart close to either I-5 if I run all California, or US395/CA-139 up the Califronia side.

some good options above I am adding to the list, appreciate it

Not far off I-5; northwest of Sacramento in the town of Brooks is the Yocha Dehe golf course - highly rated and expensive ($170 - $180). Also close by is the Cache Creek Casino Resort.

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
