Ok, I know a mat isn't the best thing for hittin' balls, but when you live in the Northeast, there's no other option during the cold season.

Anyone have any recommendations for mats? I've seen a couple on-line that tout "real-feel" fibers, and a couple of ranges near me have some decent mats...I'd like to get one for my house...

Thoughts?

The Vijay Singh mat. You can hit off different angles as it slopes. Regardless if you're a "picker" or someone who likes to divot, you will receive feedback. I think it's around $200. I've hit off it and it is fantastic.

I've just hit of the convention mat-on-concrete. However at another range near me they have a very springy board that covers up hitting inches in front of the ball, its rediculous. Be careful what you buy- you don't want it being forgiving.

I was out on the cape this weekend hitting balls at Hyannis Golf Club (had to get away from the ice and snow). They had these ProTurf mats. I thought they were a pretty good hitting surface. If you mishit the ball, you know it. If you hit it pure, you know it. I had no complaints. Like you said, living in New England you take what you can get.

    • I am six and a half minutes into this video and honestly don't think I can handle any more of it. I do see some of my swing in his - sucks it inside and gets across the line at the top. He also looks like he comes OTT a little, but is then very in to out. That's probably my cluelessness about the swing showing up though. Did I hear him say he's 15* in to out? That's insane and not something I would think anyone would want to do. I'm surprised he put this out there if his goal is to sell his method to other people, you'd think he'd find someone good who uses it to model it, not himself.

    • I think that would fall under the general umbrella of "kinematics".  And I'm sure that @iacas will correct me if I'm wrong, but in many cases the handle will be almost motionless by the time the clubhead impacts the ball.
    • I don't think it is called anything singularly specific in scientific terms other than how you described it. Some might call it a pendulum motion or something but that's probably super simplistic and not adequate description/definition. Of course, there's a whole gamut/combo of causal physics, biomechanics and geometry that results in the phenomenon.
    • As Erik says, he can correct the Wrong Place mistake by replacing the ball in its original location, see 14.5a, as long as he does it before making a Stroke at the ball.    I agree, and that's one of the worst aspects of being a rules official.  But its also an important part, I'm sure that player learned that one rule pretty clearly, and hopefully has learned to read the NTP and listen on the first tee.
