Okay.

So I have a really extreme set of players' irons...the Cleveland CG1 Black Pearls. I've been doing really well with them now that i've been playing a lot but am still having a little more trouble than I would like with the 3 and 4 iron. I'm also not really digging my play with my 19º Bobby Jones Hybrid and was thinking of trading that in for a 2 iron and the moving my 15º 3 wood down to a 16º or 17º 4 wood type.

Now, here's the question : What are the best options for mixed sets of high end, tour caliber clubs that have 2, 3 and 4 irons with fusion/cavity/insert sole whatever the heck you want to call them and the 5-PW set with blades?

Any help would be appreciated.

you could get a set of Titleists and mix and match your irons. For example, you could get a 690 CB for your 2-5 irons, and a 690 MB (muscle back) fr yor 6 iron down.

Most companies let you mix and match now, so try before you buy.

good luck!

Bridgestone's J36 is available 3-PW, and for each, you can select Pocket Cavity, Cavity Back, or Blade. But this misses your requirement for a 2-iron. Mizuno MP-57s and MP-67s are a degree off on some of the club matchings, but the 2-iron is only available on the blade (MP-67) side. Nike Golf's Forged Blades are available 1-PW (that's not a typo). Unfortunately, the CCIs don't match them in lofts very well, so even if mix-and-match is available, it'll be tough. I don't think Ping makes blades, otherwise I'd suggest their ability to mix-and-match too. I guess I'm not much help on these.

Titliest makes a couple of mixed sets that I know of, the 735cm's and the ZBs. Ive hit both and I would probably be playing the 735cm's if I had the money right now. The ZB's are a little heavy even for titliest forgings, but still excellent sticks.

Take a look at the Tour Edge Irons. They make a really nice blade, CNC Forged, that you can mix with the EX Series, iron.

You can also mix the Cobra S9 Irons with their new Muscle Back, series.

Too be honest, i wouldnt trade in your hybrid for a 2 iron. Not many people can hit a 2 iron that well at all and Its very hard to hit, unless you are sure you can hit it perfectly and consistantly I'd stick with the hybrid, Work at it and get better. Or get a different type of hybrid that you actually like.

Okay.

The question you've posed is the exact philosophy behind the Titleist 731PM irons.

There's nothing wrong with having a mixed set. Are you a DIYer? Review Cleveland Golf's site and see what their tour players are keeping in the bag. Kinda the same when reviewing Titleist's site. Pay specific attention to what Boo is playing. And Zach was -- was, mind you -- calling a 503H his 2-iron. Best blade options? BLADE? Dear Abby comes to mind.

Okay.

One of my golfing friends about a year ago swapped to the the cg2's from 2-3-4-5 and the cg1 black pearls 6-pw.

The cg2's offer good playability for a long iron and offer some forgiveness too. check them out.

Looks like I was wrong on this. After my fitting on Friday, it looks like you can order the sets mixed, so if you still want blade (-67) for 5-P, and cut muscle (-57) for 3 and 4, it's doable. Then there's the MP FLI-HI, for which you can get a 2-iron (18 degrees). Or you can do the 3 and 4 in FLI-HI too, if you want.

That degree likely doesn't matter. The Titleist 695.MB and 695.CB were two degrees off, IIRC, but "blended" at every point. Just because a club's loft is stronger doesn't mean it launches the ball lower. If the center of gravity is lower, the ball will come off the face higher. The 7-iron 695.MB and 695.CB launched at the same angle. So did the 6-iron. And 5-iron. Titleist engineered them that way.

Same's very likely true for the Mizuno sets that are intended to be blended. (hey, that's catchy.)

    • Fantastic selection! And very little driving between them. Fingers crossed the weather is good to you.
    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
