I know this is real early but I have been going to the PGA Championship for the past two years. This year I want to plan some sort of mini golf trip alongside the PGA.

I plan on coming up on Wednesday night and watching the tournment either Thursday or Friday. I really only like to go during the week because of the crowds.

OK...So what courses do you all recommend up there? I would be coming from St. Louis, MO.

Depending on where you are staying and how far you are willing to drive, there are a ton of great choices. All 6 that Big_M listed are within 30 minutes or so from Oakland Hills and will make you happy. Shepherds Hollow is a must play. A few others that are good options in the general area are Blackheath, West Wynd and Twin Lakes.

If you are going to be in town for a while and want to take a road trip, then there are a ton in the link that Matt P put up. Gaylord is about 2 1/2 hours North of Detroit and has a bunch of great choices.

just a quick note about hotels. Don't look in Detroit. Oakland Hills is in the suburbs North of the city. I would also avoid Pontiac and Southfield as well. Look at Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Waterford or Troy. They are reasonably close and generally a safer option.

A lot of the good courses in Michigan are in Northern Michigan, a good 3 hrs + from the Detroit area. If you're interested, the 2 University of Michigan courses are good tracks, both had been in the top 25 for years until recent newer courses pushed them out. Radrick Farms (the alumni course) was Pete Dye's first 18 hole Chamionship design and has routinely hosted qualifying for USGA events. The UMGC is the student course located directly across the street from Michigan Stadium. It is an Alister Mackenzie design that is a really fun track. You need to be playing with an alum to get on the courses, so if you're interested let me know.

I agree... those are great courses too

yeah... if you are up for a drive, Northern Michigan has some of the best golf I've ever played. Since you are going to the tourney during the week this might be the perfect weekend excusrion. The courses are so secluded and scenic... on many courses you can hardly even see other holes.

Once again my fellow Michigander is right... Auburn Hills is probably the easiest drive... they have a bunch of hotels around the Chysler Building... and it is close to I-75.

Thanks for the ideas/suggestions!!!

ya I have never been to detroit so thanks for letting me know what areas are safe. I am going to be making my hotel reservation this week. I waited until the last minute last year in oklahoma and i had to stay in a city 40 minutes away. all the hotels were booked!! lol.

If any of you are going to be in the area or live up there and want to get an informal outing together, let me know. I would be coming up with a couple friends and my wife. maybe we could get a little money game going!!!

1) Shepard's Hollow - 10-27

I agree completely with Shepherds Hollow. It is a fantastic golf course. I can hardly wait to go visit the in-laws this summer, just so I can go back and play there. I have played Greystone, and the Majestic as well. Not in

SH's category but very nice courses in their own right.

Having grown up in Michigan my two favorite courses were:

1) Forest Ackers GC(Michigan State Campus)
http://www.golfmsu.msu.edu/
This was the course we played the State Championship on in the early 80's

2) Cascades Golf Course
http://www.cascadesgolfcourse.com/
This was our Golf Team home course, Jack Nicklaus played there once and liked it as the legend goes :)

None of these are near Detroit but if you go through or near the Capitol in Lansing, they are worth playing!
