X Outs?

I went to Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday just to blow some time. Their huge selection of balls caught my eye, so I had to investigate. I am glad I did, because I happened upon the brilliance of X Out balls. Fifteen dollars for a dozen TM Black TP, as opposed to the regular $45.

What exactly is the difference between X Outs and their regular counter-parts?

there is no difference except cosmetic differences, like the graphics on the ball came out wrong or something. then they slap a big ugly X-OUT on the side and sell em!

Also, I don't think they're on the USGA list of conforming balls. So, you wouldn't be able to use them in a tournament that requires a conforming ball.

because they have slight imperfections- they are not identical to the ones the manufactures sent in.

interesting, they are nonconforming because they dont look the same as the good ones, hmm. but as far as performance wise, they are identicle, or so im told buy a dude at the golf shop.

buy em and see, if they are that cheap its worth just trying them. im sure there is no difference.

It saved me $30, so any slight imperfections are irrelevant.

They are non-conforming because they are technically a different model of ball than the non x-out version - for all intents and purposes I would imagine no two are exactly alike - so the manufacturers don't submit them to the USGA for testing. I guess theoretically if every single x-out ball from a particular manufacturer had the exact same blemish, they could submit them for testing and get them onto the conforming ball list - assuming they actually conformed

I also looked at some x-outs at Dick's this weekend, ProV1s though. I was planning to try a box, but not after I saw them. I opened 2 sleeves and both had more than minor imperfections. A couple of them had small chunks of the cover gouged out. One had extra cover material squished out of the seam all the way around. The other 3 balls didn't have any visible issues other than labeling. But still, if that's any indication of what x-outs are like, I'll stick with less expensive regular golf balls.

My understanding is that there are certain specs +/- that have to be met and if there is any question, the manufacturer will not sell them as a normal produce. Also, in manufacturing, certain imperfections point to possible problems elsewhere in the process. Can you imagine the problems that Nike would have if Tiger won a tournament and they found out some non conforming balls had slipped through?

Some tournament committee's will not allow X-outs, so it's good to check.

I've used Pro Vs and Pro V X-outs which are a lot cheaper and the only difference I've ever seen between them is that when you hit the more expensive ones into the trees, you can never find them.

even if the balls have a slight improfection the chances are that the imperfection will not effect the golf ball as much as a small speck of mud

I've been buying the Titleist X-Outs from WalMart for $10 / dozen. They ones lately have all been recent models. I've yet to find one that didn't play okay. As someone stated, though, I'd use the "regular" model for tourneys and competitive rounds.

what model Titleist do you usally find in there becuase i was looking at buying a couple dozen about a year ago. All the balls were new but antcient there were even some balls that said they were woud on the side stamp though most were dt 90's which i think are also about 4 years old.
