I was on the range the other day, And I was thinking about the technology of all the current game improvement irons. And While I was looking at the topline and the view of the club, I was wondering. "My Clubs are 5 years old, and basically game improvement, but 5 years ago..are these almost blades?" I know by the view they are obviously cavity backs, but the way They hit and the way some of the points of the club look something almost tells me Im playing blades. Here are some pictures Ive posted of my 8 Iron, do you think they almost look like blades? I kind of feel stupid for asking this, And i'll know the answer already, but I just want to see what others think.

BTW: These are Ram Laser Irons. Sorry for the img quality, i couldnt find my camera so I used my video camera.

the differences I see are that blades will have a thinner sole, a thinner top line, minimal offset, and a shorter head. so in comparison to yours, i dont think they look like blades, but your irons dont look like super game improvement, they just look like regular cavitybacks.

Thanks, thats also what I forgot to put in my original post. I wanted to know what kind of irons they really were. Thanks for the clarification.

I guess they just feel like blades compared to newer technology clubs these days.

yeah... those look like they have a pretty heafty offset and a medium topline. I would call them GI irons... similar to my old TA-5's. The sole is another indicator of a players iron, and those have a fairly wide sole... but not a SGI sole like say a Nike Slingshot or some such club..

Although they are GI clubs, I know for a fact they dont hit like them, and dont feel like them.

It seems 5 years ago they had no technology, because I get little forgivness and Lots of workability.

    • So far as I can tell, he's talking about how the distance from ball to hole on the ground does not line up with the distance from eyes to hole on the ground - that's gotta go down the longest line of the triangle. So 9 feet away on the ground is about 10.8 feet away (if your eyes are 6 feet off the ground). 3 feet away and you're 6.7 feet away. 3 feet should be 1/3 of the break as 9 feet, but your finger measure is really 6.7/10.8, which is roughly double the measure.  But outside of 9 feet, as he shows in his chart it makes barely a lick of difference. I can't tell the difference between 2% and 2.2%, so 9 feet and 15 feet are pretty much the same. Inside of 9 feet, where it starts making more of a difference, the using the lower lip for the start of your finger measure is pretty close to being about right anyway. That might start to break down if you have a 4% slope and you're 3 feet away, but that's basically unpinnable and not something you're going to come across unless you're playing in some sort of greenkeeper's revenge event. Then all bets are off anyway. AE is designed to be pretty darn close to what the real number is. It has some flexibility in it (the bend of your elbow for example) to iron out some of the stuff that won't quite line up exactly right like green speeds, uphill vs downhill etc.
    • Havent used it much yet but the thing i liked is that you can enter launch monitor data into it and preview courses with your shot patterns
    • Always give you something that can give you feedback. The brain works by slowly rewiring neural pathways that by doing a comparison between what you were doing before to what you need to do.
    • My practice green has 2% slope across a lot of it and 9 foot putt with 2% slope is nowhere near 27" of break. It's like half of that. I'll measure it myself tomorrow. I also don't really understand what point you're trying to make, are you trying to say that the green reading system that is used by like tens of thousands of golfers including plenty of tour players and caddies is incorrect and I'm supposed to believe that based on a couple lines you typed in a spreadsheet? I don't get the whole eye height vs ball height thing. You mean to tell me you actually laid on the green at ball height and measured with your fingers?
