I just came back to the game a couple of months ago. I never really quit but haven't played seriously since the early 90s. I took up the game in 1988 and worked real hard at it for the first couple of years but circumstances caused me to become just an occasional duffer. I didn't even pick up a club last year if that tells you anything. Now I'm back and am really struggling to get my game up to par, so to speak. I've been playing several times a week, practicing at the range, taking lessons, etc., and had a real breakthrough today. It all seemed to start coming together yesterday so I couldn't wait to play today. I played a really challenging par 3 course today and shot 15 over, which is really good for me right now. The score might seem high but it really doesn't tell the whole story. I was hitting all my clubs really well and I've always been good with a putter. I've never had more confidence in my swing than I have right now. For the first time in my golfing life, my swing is actually repeatable. I feel like I'm on the verge of getting to a single digit handicap and couldn't be happier. I can't wait to get back on the course. Anyway, just thought I'd share because I'm using a lot of the tips I've picked up from you guys. The lessons haven't hurt either

Thats great to hear! You just proved to people that score isnt everything, its how your hitting your clubs and the shots you make and the confidence you build.

Just keep up with the positive attitude and build on the confidence in your swing and you'll go far. Oh, practice your putting too and you'll shock yourself! Keep it up.

    • I think we just need @StuM, @vasaribm, and @CarlSpackler to let us know what tees they'd like to play. And if anyone knows anyone for @David L Yskes's spot… still open.

    • I will say, I typed all that out and it’s not what I end up doing most of the time. Easy to journal it out then it is putting it into practice. 🤣 So, I am going to try this out for a while.  After every shot, say or think, “Onto the next challenge”. That is the phrase that will transition from the previous shot to the next one. Then, we will see what the score ends up at the end. Don’t look up till it’s over.
    • I deal with these outside things the same way I deal with my own "failures", like slices of duffs or missed short putts.  The same way I deal with idiots on the highway.  The same way I dealt with foolish clients.  Its no differrent from handling anything in life that doesn't go as planned.  I try to give my irritation a moment to be in my conciousness, to acknowledge it, and then to mentally push it to the "resolved" part of my brain.  Focus on the one thing you CAN control in the moment, the one and only golf shot you have in front of you.  All of that other stuff is "chatter", background noise, none of it really matters, you can't change it because its in the past.  Exactly HOW I manage to do that, I'm not sure, perhaps decades of experience, and I still let things get to me at times, but that's my goal.
