Golf is mostly about feeling confident, so go with a club that makes you feel confident. A matching driver/3 wood won't do you a damn bit of good if you can't hit the 3-wood. If necessary just buy matching head covers . Also if you're just starting maybe looking at a 15 deg hybrid would be better than a 3-wood (easier to hit, shorter shaft, and therefore, more accurate)

You're the tool.

I'm sorry you can't laugh at the guy who just dropped 2G's on clubs he has no idea how to use. I have no problem with beginers... we were all there once. I am very patient and willing to help if asked. But that doesn't change the fact that it IS funny to see some guy pull up in his BMW and pull out the Nike staff bag filled with 14 shinny new Nike clubs when he has never played golf before and just thought he might give it a try. I never crticised anyone... I made an observation that often times the guy with the matching bag and set is a newbie. If anyone was offended I appoligize, as I meant no harm... and since you don't fit into that category anyway, you don't really need to complain about it.

I'm new to buying clubs and am wondering if it is necessary to buy the same type of fairway woods as your driver? For example, would I be alright using a TaylorMade r7 Draw Driver along with Callaway Big Bertha fairway woods? Does it matter if the brands are the same with different clubs, or does it not make a difference at all?

Welcome to the wonderful world of golf equipment! One of the beauties of golf is that you can choose any 14 clubs you want for your bag. I used to use a TaylorMade driver, a Cobra 3-wood, and my starter set's 5-wood.

Well, what do I know? My handicap is north of 20. But there are guys whose living depends on playing well, such as those on the PGA Tour, who don't match brands on driver and 3-wood. Unless you have an equipment sponsor and a contract requiring you to play only their driver and woods, stick with clubs you like - your TM and Callaway combination should work just fine, if that's what you have.

So are you saying people that just start out should be buying bottom line equipment even though they have the funds to buy the best of the best that is out there now.

I dont understand where you come from on this one. I am sure if you started out and you had the choice between brand new Nike or Taylormade Irons or the bottom of the line throw away wal-mart clubs, which would you choose? I dont think you should laugh at or look down at anyone for the clubs that they have or the skill level they possess on the course. We all have to start somewhere and if I could afford top of the line equipment when I first started out I sure as hell would have done it.

Not at all... I think all you guys are taking me way out of context... just trying to make a little joke. I don't care one bit what people buy. I have always been a more frugal person I guess. If I'm new to something I usually start with the basics (whatever that may be), just to see if I like something before I go spend a lot of money.

Example: my wife thought it would be interesting to learn to go clay shooting with me. She had never done it before, so first I took her out with a rental gun. She enjoyed it, so then we bought her a cheaper gun to learn on... sure we could have afforded an $800, or $1200 gun, but why spend the money until we know for certain the hobby/sport will take. I've also seen guys just getting into skiing who go buy stiff slalomn skiis when they should be on a beginer ski. Why did they buy that set... because it was the most expensive, and the sales guy mislead them. My only point, well actually it was to just make a little joke, but other than that... it was simply to say that it seems like whenever I see someone with matching sets and staff bags they; are new to the game, and probably inexperienced, and possibly bought those clubs because they looked nice and cost the most, not necessarily because they were the "right" set for them. I am generalizing, and there are many exceptions... if I offended anyone I'm sorry. I have no issue with beginers or people playing with fancy new clubs... I was just making a little joke that must have struck a cord with some of you guys.

This is probably the third or fourth time that you have made something in a joking manner that I have taken literally.

With me though, I usually play at higher end courses and all I see is matching sets with 300 dollar staff bags and usually the people can play. Its sad that the game has turned into what you have in the bag rather than what you can do on the course though. For some people its more about appearence then actually playing the game. You need to put a signal in your funny posts. Like end the last sentence you write with a code word. Penguin works for me.

Its a sad day when a society uses a

Back to the original post. Matching fairway woods might be a good idea (hitting off the turf as apposed to teed up high). The driver hits enough different that whatever works should be used, which may not match the other woods.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
