Help Getting Hips Over Ankles at Address

Recommended Posts

Video analysis I had done not too long ago revealed that at address my hips were too far behind me at address.  If you drew a line from my hip joint straight down in a down-the-line view, that line was at or behind my heels.  It was the first step toward early extension in the downswing and an over-the-top path.  So I've tried to get my hip joint directly over the center of my ankles at address, but every time I do this (using a mirror or video), my weight shifts toward my toes.  Probably balls of feet is more accurate.  I do this because if I DON'T do that I tend to 'fall forward' because my balance is shifted too far forward.  Thus the balls/toes are used to compensate.

But there's so much instruction online that says do NOT have your weight as far forward as the balls of your feet...it's supposed to be evenly distributed between toes and heels.

So I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't...  If I have weight in the center of my feet, then my hips are too far back (to keep me balanced).  If I have the hips in the right place, then my weight is too far forward (again, to keep me balanced).

Any advice/thoughts?

We do athletic things from the balls of our feet. I'm not really on board with having it in the middle.

Various topics here will discuss that.

Yeah, that's too far back IMO, and will generally lead to EE (during the backswing, even).

It may be difficult to tell exactly where your weight is and how it is distributed. Weight and pressure may be felt different. What feels like on the balls of your feet may be more centered than you think.

    • I was a marshal on this course for a senior event in the late 1980's.  Lived in Portsmouth.  I don't ever recall the wind letting up in this part of Newport.  We'd take the kids to watch all the elaborate kites.😊
    • My course has A LOT of tree roots that are in play. Nothing we can do about it. As a municipal, the city is very against cutting any trees down, until absolutely necessary. I didn’t know about this local rule, so good to know.

    • Why is this a shock? Maybe outside of purposely putting a tree into the fairway (I am taking to you Arthur Hills), all the trees I've encountered had the trunk of the tree like 10-30 yards off the edge of the fairway. Even heavily tree line golf courses. I have never had an instance of a tree root encroaching into the fairway.  This MLR was unknown to me until this thread was posted. Since it was approved by the USGA, they know more about this than me.  I can see that it could be considered GUR since it changes typical aspect of a fairway. I could also say, the golf course needs to maybe adjust their fairway cutting or remove the tree if that is the case.  If a course wants to evoke MLR, then fine.
    • I've been getting away from being too technical with putting. When I am on the putting green, I just hit putts certain distances to get a feel for how the ball looks while rolling out. I hardly ever try to make putts. I really focus on how the ball rolls for pace.  On the course, I've been getting away from making any practice strokes. I think I end up making the same practice stroke for most all distances because I am going through the motions. I wanted to get back to just feeling it out with my depth perception and how I intuitively feel how hard a putt should be hit. My distance control has returned to a much better state.  Here are a good set of drills.
