This might be a fairly long post, but might be interesting to some.

I started playing golf at a young age, in my mid 20s now. Played 4 years on my high school golf team. Thought by my senior year in high school that I would be one of the better ones in the state. That never happened and I never really improved much, if you can believe that. I played all the time, took lessons and felt like I really was working harder than most. I never got better. I am a very good athlete. Could have played basketball in college and grew up playing on traveling teams for all different sports. I just feel like I have always stayed the same at golf.

My father was an excellent golfer. Didn't play professional, but won a lot of local events and almost qualified for the US Open. He always questioned why he didn't just teach me the game himself rather than sending me to someone else to teach me. Through high school we played a TON. He always was trying to help me and give me tips, but again I would never get better. I watched people around me lower their scores and improve as time went on, but I did not.

Anyways, I know this is getting long so I'll cut it short. I haven't played golf in probably 2 years, maybe a round here or there, but nothing even close to like I use to play. Main reason is my father died and I lost most interest. For some reason I got the bug back after some time. I am on an absolute mission to become a good golfer. I'm talking mid to low 70s.

Does anyone have idea where to start or what to do? I've been to teaching pros and that really got me no where. Is there a routine or drills anyone has done on here to drastically improve their game? I am really lost at where to start.

I went to the range today and was hitting my irons really short and high in the air. Overall, striking the ball terribly.

I know this post is kind of all over the place. I am a terrible writer. If anyone has a gameplan for me or any advice that would be awesome. Like I said, I really have no one to turn to now. I just want to be the golfer I know I am capable of being.

Thanks guys.

Glad to see that golf has won you over again. Welcome back.
It seems to me that you take your game too seriously. I would not set too high a target right now. Put the fun back in playing the game. The scores will come if you really enjoy your good shots. You will find yourself hitting good ones more often.
Take it easy. Golf is an enjoyable pastime.

I agree about enjoying it. That is something that I used to struggle with from time to time. I'd have to remind myself that it is a game and that I should be having fun. I'm just overly competitive. Sports came pretty natural to me for the most part and golf did not. It was the one game that hung me up and that I always bothered me and still does. I guess that is why it is considered the toughest sport to become great at it by many people.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
