Ok, so I know that this is an amazingly broad subject, but I am looking to improve my game and get good feedback from my clubs. I don't want to get so mad when I play that I want to give up, so I don't think I should use blades? (Correct my if I'm wrong) I was looking at different Titleist models as well as Clevelands and Mizuno's.

I like the feel I get from mizuno blades but I haven't played them in a round, and don't know if I would struggle a lot with them or not.

Titleists feel solid in the simulator but I haven't played them on a course either, they look nice and I've heard good reviews too.

Lastly, the clevelands feel very solid as well and I am set to demo them this weekend.

My question is, is a blade going to be too difficult for me to work (At around 12-14 handicap) I have decent ball striking and love the feel when I catch it clean. Am I losing anything by going with a cavity back?

Not sure why the big uprising for blades lately.....

Wonder how many pros use pure blades these days? I am willing the guess that most use some sort of a forged MB or CB iron because even as good as the pro is they still make mistakes and need some help on mishits.

If you are looking for some good transition clubs I like the idea of the mixed sets. Forgiving 3-5 irons mixed with some forged 6-pw set. I was looking at the Nike procombo tours before buying my MP67 ( I know the MP67 are blades, I just liked the look and feel of then when I was looking).

I strike my 3,4,5 pretty well I don't think I would benefit from a mixed set, the mizuno's just feel so nice when just messing around at golf galaxy.

I just don't know how I would do when I'm actually on the course. I just don't want to invest a lot of money and then be mad every time i swing the club! haha.

With a cavity back you will lose little distance and you won't work the ball like a blade. I suggest getting cavity back long irons and blade short irons. That is what I do.

Plus if you choose blades beware. Imagine you have to hit the ball on the same part of the club every time, and that size is smaller than a dime.

So I should look at cavity backs? What is the difference in performance of the Forged vrs. Cast cavity backs, what are "Musclebacks" (Are they just filled in cavity backs?) And what is the benefit of those?

If you are afraid of using a muscleback, why don't you try the Mizuno MP60? They have a cavity style back, are a little more forgiving and you can work the ball. They will still provide you with the feedback you are looking for.

Yeah i have to agree.

I think more and more pros and scratch markers are going towards forged CB's and cavitys because they are quickly becoming more and more playable while stil offering that,MUCH NEEDED, )BY EVEN PROS) forgiveness. I guess it is always that ebb and flow between tradition/blades and future/cb's. I personally think EGO/marketing has a lot to do with it too. I dont think i would ever use a true blade, i need that little bit of forgiveness. PS: i have sold my Clubs to a mate and im getting the new AP2's next weekend. yay

i like the Taylormade R7 TP irons brcause they have the look of a blade and playability of a cavity back

I play nike slingshots, which are a game-improvement club. They are VERY forgiving and adds distance as well. Im a 10 handicap and would not dare use a set of blades. My friend has some, who is about a 12-14 handicap, and he has popped the heads off of a couple of em.

I have nothing bad to say about my Titleist AP1's, they have improved my game significantly coming from a blade (PING I3)

they offer forgiveness with the feel of a forged club..

shaping shots is not quite as "easy" as blades, but still very much possible

Why not try the clubs for a round? I'm thinking about trying a couple from this Golf Galaxy's affiliate.

I tried that and apparently they only have one set of CG Reds, as I had them set to demo on a golf trip this weekend, (They were supposed to come tomorrow morning) and I just not received an email saying that the guy that had them before hasn't returned them so I don't get them. How ridiculous is it that they RELY on the guy returning the clubs on time for me to get them? You'd think if they want to run a successful business they'd have a lot of each set.

Not giving them my business.

Ah that sucks. I am in search of new irons to upgrade from Ping Eye2's and was thinking of Wilson Ci7's since I'm on a budget. They are about $350 w/ shipping from eBay.

I like the look of the AP1's...I like the look of the price tag too. I'm going to golf galaxy tomorrow with with money...maybe I'll pick up a set, who knows! It will probably be between the CG Reds, r7's, and the AP1, I'll probably be there for a while.

Just curious, do you plan on getting fit at Golf Galaxy? I'm contemplating if I should get fit for my new set.

There is one thing I can tell you with certainty - there are very few people on the planet that can or should play pure blades - even the pros. Check out closely what players who aren't sponsored are playing.

There are many fine manufacturers out there, all making solid clubs. The most important decision you make will be shaft flex (make sure you get that right). I highly recommend Rifle or True Temper in steel and the graphite shafts have improved dramatically.

Your scores will be higher with blades. If you want to get close, my personal recommendations are MacGregor M565 vfoil irons with Rifle shafts. I sell golf clubs and have virtually every brand.

These clubs have received the highest rating of any iron on golfreview.com. They are targeted at mid-handicapers and they are also forged. I would consider looking at adding a hybrid (possibly a Nickent or hogan CFT ti) in lieu of the three iron

I probably will for the hell of it...it comes free with a new iron set purchase. I don't know how I would benefit from it.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
