A newbie from Southern Indiana

Hey ya'll. Found this site just searching for random discussions on numerous issues. I really think I will enjoy being on the website.


Well, a little about me. I'm from Southern Indiana, and go to school at the University of Evansville, majoring in Economics and Mathematics. For the summer, I work as a Customer Service Manager at my local Wal-Mart. I have a girlfriend, who is the love of my life. I try to play golf as often as I can. I average around 82. With a low 18 hole around at 70 at my local track. About midway through last summer I made a commitment to becoming a better golfer. I felt like my clubs were holding me back a bit, so in came a new set of Mizuno MP30's. At the end of last summer, i really started to play well, averaging around 75 over my last 8 rounds. This spring, I was back up around the mid 80's then I shot 71 at Quail Crossing (and it was my first time playing the course). But, I just couldn't get anything after that. Really, I'm not making very many putts.

Anyways, with my commitment to play better this summer, I'm really going to try to visit many different types of course around the area. So, if any of you guys are around So. Indiana, let me know and we can go for a round.

DRIVER: 905T w/ Fujikura E360 Shaft
3 Wood 906 F4 w/ Aldila Proto "By You"
Irons: MP 30 w/ Rifle 5.5 Wedges Oil Can 50*, Vokey SM 54* and 58*Putter: C-06

Well...i am back home in town called Marengo. Its about an hour east of Evansville. But while I'm in Evansville, I like to play Cambridge, Henderson Players Club and Quail Crossing. Those are some really nice courses with good twilight rates.

In my bag:

      Awesome. We were originally going to play Quail Ridge but ended up moving some things around and are going to do the following when we go in May Day 1 Tobacco Road Day 2 Southern Pines and Pine Needles Day 3 Tot Hill Farm There are a couple good course vlog/matches on YouTube at Southern Pines, it looks awesome.

      I got two trips lined up this year.  First, Pinehurst next month. Qual Ridge, Mid Pins, Southern Pines 😁, Mid South, Talamore. I am looking forward to playing Southern Pines since it got redone.  Second, a trip to eastern Wisconsin in early August. Whistling Straights, Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills.

      You are probably doing the right thing in having more fairway woods or hybrids in your bag than irons. Just easier to maximize ball speed for you swing speed to get the proper gaps.  A driver is teed up, so you have more leeway there. The 7-wood is probably more optimized for carry for you. A slower swing speed needs higher launch and spin to keep the ball in the air. With the 3-wood, it probably launches too low with not enough spin to keep it in the air.  If you are not going to go get lessons, or do some sort of swing speed training, go get fitted for clubs. Clearly your mix-match of equipment is not optimized.

      32 putts are average for a single digit handicap golfer. Limiting three putting is the biggest task. Speed control is the most important aspect of putting. Probably the 2nd most important is aim.  The putter is going to rotate open a bit on the backstroke. It might stay square to the arc of the putting stroke, but that does mean the face opens up a bit on the backstroke when measured against where the face is oriented at address. Go get a putter lesson as well.

      Keep us up to date with your findings, please.  I'm not looking for a putter, but I'm sure you're not alone in your venture to get the putts rolling better.
