Hi - belong to myscorecard.com. 3 friends and i are a regular foursome. they like to bet $5 round and give points and so forth for winner. I am not much a of gambler myself but I go along cuz its my friends. Anyways - here is my question:
on myscorecard there is section where you calculate the COURSE handicap based the slope of the courses - based on their website - i would have to give the 20 handicap 7 strokes accross the board cuz I am 13.8.
7 strokes seems outrageous to me - does that sound right?? I have to give the 22 handicap 10 stokes !!!!! I dont get to choose holes where they given or anything - just across the board! I am suspect of this...it just sounds ridiculous to me. Can anyone here confirm or un confirm that this proper??
of course my friends swear its right and holed myscorecard up like its the golf bible - and ofcourse they do because I am the sap giving strokes

so what say yee????

What is the slope rating of the course? Yes, it makes sense, because most courses get tougher the higher your handicap is, and your friends may well need the strokes.

Consider an extreme example to see why you don't just take the handicap difference exactly: if a 10 handicap and a 20 handicap were playing a course, as it is set up for the U.S. Open, against one another, would 10 strokes be enough to make it a reasonably even match?

Make the higher handicap play you even up sometimes. It's good for him, and the only way he will get better.

Sandwedge 74,
It all makes sense except for your 'across the board' comment. Each hole at your course should have a handicap number from 1 to 18. Generally the odd numbers are on the front 9 and the even numbers on the back. These are the relative difficulties of the holes in relation to the others. Your friend with 7 strokes would get his strokes on handicap holes 1 through 7 only. So it shouldn't be so bad for you not to be able to choose the holes as they are laid out to you by the course. Your friend only gets his strokes on the 7 hardest holes assuming an even distribution of difficulty between the front and back 9. Also remember that both your friends handicaps and yours are generally based on the best 10 scores out of your last 20, so shooting much better than their handicap should be a rarity. As they improve, it will get tougher for them if they are honest in submitting their scores and factor in ESC when submitting.

Have fun, and play some closest to the pins on the par 3s for beer. It always brings out the best in me and my playing partners.

Oh, and feel lucky, you'd be giving me close to 30 strokes over 18 holes. But I am improving and the handicap index is coming down.

n3xt, if you are a 26.8 and sandwedge74 is a 13.8, he would only be giving you 13 shots on most courses. Not close to 30.

You are absolutely right Saks. I was thinking of my own strokes only.

    • Day 4 (24 Jun 26) - Played the mid-week shootout - iffy day on putts as I had 35 and of late been in the upper 20's.   Greens recently verti-cut and they are a bit bump and long haired - no excuses as I need to learn to trust making the proper adjustments.   Overall a decent day with some solid long game shots.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
