Beginner to the Game - Need Equipment Advice

I need to try and find a golf club around my area (Lewisiville) that will let me try different clubs and even suggest clubs based on my swing, etc. That would probably be the most beneficial as I could compare them head to head before I make my decisions.

Well, the reason I am looking to upgrade is two fold,

I completely agree, but there are some clubs out there you can get for a good price and still play great.

If I were you, personally, I would get about a $200 set of irons, and a $150 driver. Then maybe get 2 spin-milled vokey's...or sv tour's. That would probably be reasonable in your position.

It seems like you're a little caught up in buying expensive nike clubs. Spend a couple hundred of that thousand on lessons and you might even start to like those old wilson's. I pull out old clubs all the time to work on my swing. You don't want to be buying clubs in the hopes of compensating for bad swing technique. Just my opinion though.

I just upgraded. There is something to be said for new equipment -- part ego, part utility, part technology, part fun.

My suggestion is to add a couple-few milled-faced wedges eg Cleveland cg14 or the Vokey. I believe they improved my short game a lot - crisper contact, better ball flight, added spin, etc. Relatively expensive but well worth it.

IMHO the non-branded clubs are often as good as the name brand at considerable savings. If money is no object, buy the best. But for me, $400 on a driver is just too much. My driver was closed to $100. And its performance is a good as any other branded TI driver.

Same for my irons. At $240 (4-9i with upgraded shafts and grips), they are a bargain compared to the Callaway's x18/x20 that they are similar to. And I could be selective on which ones I bought, on shaft length, lie, shaft brand and material and grips.



The biggest improvements are from practice and lessons - not purchases.

The worst thing you could do is buy nice new clubs, but then play like crap! If you intend to spend $1000+ on your new clubs, then that's awesome! Just make sure you allocate some of those funds, or extra funds, to some good old lessons!

Enjoy the search for clubs, it's half the fun imo!
