Putting vs Chipping

I've been practicing chipping from short distances and various lies. Short distances being about a yard or so off the green.

From this distance, assuming a decent lie, what is your preference, chipping or putting? Also, do you treat these distance shots as "makeable" or do you want to get inside a certain range, like 18 inches?

All opinions are greatly appreciated.

For me, it depends on how far away the hole is. Say my shot is a yard or so off the front of the green like you say, and the pin is on the front of the green, then I'll opt for the putter. If I have the same situation but the pin is in the back, Ill most likely chip it.

So, from a good lie just a yard or so off the green:
The less green you have to work with, I'd putt it.
The more green you have to work with, I'd chip it.

Then again, I've heard the exact opposite, but I think this makes more sense.
Keep in mind there are other factors which could change your shot selection, for example, if the green is sloping toward or away from you, in which case you may take the other option.

I'd have to say that if the pin is on a upward slope or at least 20 feet away i would chip. If its a down slope to the pin i'd for surely take out the putter. Really it's mostly on the shape of the green.

I look at how rough the fringe is that I am putting from. If there are cuts or bumps or anything else that will slow down or throw the line off my putt then I will chip. Otherwise I try to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible.
