I watched the first round of the Tour Championship today. Good stuff, and it was interesting to see who got off on a good start. Tiger had an odd day from the bunkers...

I watched nearly all of the coverage, and not once did I hear Ian Baker-Finch say " on a course without roll ." I did hear on several occasions the announcers talk about rolling the ball through the fairway.

I also specifically recall a time when Sergio Garcia rolled the ball over 100 yards past Retief Goosen's drive. This was commented upon by Azinger, I believe, and not with any surprise - conditions on Tour are firm, and guys regularly get 25+ yards of roll.

On one hole, for example, I watched balls landing short of a shadow of a wide tree, bounce nearly over the shadow, and then roll another two to three shadows wide. One of the players walked through that same shadow... and it took him 12 regular steps.

But you can't convince someone who doesn't want to be convinced, regardless of how many facts you've got on your side...

I didn't get to catch any today. I probably won't see much tomorrow either. I hate working afternoons sometimes.

I did check the leaderboard all day, and I was happy to see CH3 in the mix again. It's amazing how good a guy can play when there is no pressure to do well. He is one of the most talented golfers in the game, but he just gets eaten up by the pressure. I'm actually surprised he made his way into the top-30.

The leaderboard looks good though. I'll be ready to see who prevails on the weekend.

I didn't get to see any of it today but I'll be there at tournament tomorrow. It will be the first tour event that I've been to since the pre-Tiger days. I'm looking forward to it.
