I have always been taught that any club you strike on the ground (anything but driver) is in the middle of the stance and the ball just forward of that. I stand with both feet together to find the bottom of the swing arc and then place the ball just forward of that. HTH :)

I have been recently convinced that there is no correct answer to this question. Obviously you don't want it way up in your stance, or drastically in the back of your stance.

I went to the Traveler's Championship this weekend as it was being played about 25 min from where I live. I was paying close atention to ball position, every player is different. Some play the ball in the front of their stance for all shots. Some move it around. Some play everything near the center except driver, etc.

Find what's comfortable for you and then stick with it.

Everyone has a different golf swing.....and everyone will place the ball differently in your stance. For me, I feel comfortable putting the ball where it is just behind my practice swing low spot. Considering the lie and how my swing is that day, it changes. But, I feel that if I do a practice swing to find my bottom of the arc, I can put it in the correct position......has helped me a lot to be more consistent.

My $0.02 - my 6 iron typically sits right in the middle for me though slight alterations help - i position the ball a little forward of center if i want to avoid a pull hook (and if struck properly - fade a little bit) and back if i want to avoid a slice (and if struck properly - draw a little bit). The lie obviously also matters - side-hill lies, uphill, downhill - they all affect (or at least should) where the position of the ball ought to be.

Ball position really depends on your swing, take a few practise swings on grass, see where the divot starts, - the ball position should be about half an inch behind start of the divot.

Many pros advocate relating the ball position to a part of your upper body. Depending on how your spine is tilted, and the width of your stance you can get an illusion where your ball position is relative to your feet. The ball position you see from above the ball will not necessarily be the same one that someone (or a camera) would reveal from a face on view of your swing. As I've mentioned in the past when referring to ball position if you look at pictures of the pros you'll see they tend to have the ball in line with the front ear (or as Greg Norman and Trevor Immelman have said the shirt logo) area or forward of that, and almost never behind the front ear.

Here are pictures of the pros where I have drawn lines up from the golf balls:

Wow, so is it safe to assume that even though the ball maybe center, a line drawn up would be close to my left ear and NOT the center of my head?
