Hey guys,

Lately I've been hitting almost all of my shots off the toe of my clubs. Generally, when i mishit, it's a duck hook with both my irons and driver, but 98% of the time it's off the toe and it hurts my distance and accuracy greatly.

Without seeing a swing (which i know is the proper way to do it), what generally causes toe shots?

Just FYI, when i mishit it's a duck hook/pull hook..etc, but yesterday with the driver I was focusing on steepening my swing plane and i was still hitting off the toe of the club but the shots were pushed/fade. No dramatic slices, but i still missed most of my tee shots right. Just a weak connection off the toe of the driver and even some sky balls.

I want to focus primarily on the driver here because my tee shots are destroying my game at the moment. Anything =< 140yds, and putting, is saving my game.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

Things that can cause hits off the toe:

1. Spine angle rises throughout the swing. 2. Lie angles on clubs are too flat. 3. Ball too far forward in stance. Usually it's #1 which means that the upper half of the body rises (aka "bails outs") through the swing. This can be caused by many factors such as poor address position and locking the back knee on the backswing. 3JACK

Interesting. It probably is #1 because i used to have a tendency to straighten my back leg excessively to the point of locking. When i went to Stratton, VT golfU that was the main thing they were trying to correct on me. I've probably reverted back to doing that without even realizing.

Is there anything else to look at? I'm going to try moving the ball back a little in my stance as well.

I wish it was this, but i don't think it is. I'll give it a shot though.

you should check your club face at the top of you backswing...its probably pointing straight up in the air which would be very closed, and could definately cause the "shrimp/hook." if thats the case, you might check your grip and make sure its not to strong. any video you can get for analysis would be good for us

Swinging out to in too much, just as swinging too much in to out causes the shanks.

Agree with the Outside-to-In causing the toe-shot. I find myself, when trying to hit the ball too hard, or digging it out of deep rough, to come over the top a bit, and yep - toe it.

At this stage, i believe i'm going in-out. But we'll see. I'm going to the range tomorrow morning to see what i can figure out.

Thats a big problem I had (and still have sometimes). when I line up on the ball the way it feels natural, i take a quarter step forward and swing naturally. For the most part this fixed my problem :d

Well, went to the range this morning and it was excellent.

First i focused on not locking my back leg on the backswing, which i'm not sure i was even doing in the first place. But, I did it as a precautionary. It helped a little as i did notice better contact overall. Still a little bit toward the toe end, but no where near my last outing.

So then I moved myself somewhat closer to the ball and, amazingly it made a world of difference. Not sure why, or when i put myself further from the ball. I used to lean and put my arms out a bit more before i got my swing revamped in 08/07 so i guess I just gradually went that way.

I'm ready to go back out there and destroy my friend!

Thanks

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
