Can any of you experts explain this on the takeaway? I read that this is the proper way to take the club back. I'm having a real problem of taking the club too far inside right away, which causes a flat swing.

what type of drills can i use to get a more up-right takeaway?

thanks!!

Easiest way to check this is on your backswing, when your club reaches parallel to the ground, about waisy height, where is the butt of the club point? If you're taking back to the inside too much, the butt of your club will be pointing right of your target and your club head will be off your hip or butt cheak from the down the line view. Done correctly, the butt should point at your target or parallel to your ball line.

Another check is when your left arm reaches parallel to the ground, where is the the butt of the club pointing? It should be pointing at the same line your ball is on. If you're too flat, the butt will be pointing way out in front of the ball.

I good cheap practice for this I've found is to buy one of those presentation last pointers. Take an old club and remove the rubber at the butt. Stick the point in there and turn it on. When you take the club back, you can see where the butt is pointing. Very enlightnening.

    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
