Im out there to have fun,Ill go for shots if I think Ive got the slightest chance of making it. I suppose I could get the handicap down if I played "the course" but wheres the fun in hitting an 8 off the tee and a 7 into the green on a dogleg when you can draw a big one around the corner, just missing the big Oak,catching the lip of the bunker and rolling down onto the green. Have fun!

Ps Ive made that shot once in about 25 goes

I believe it should vary depending on the hole you are playing. Where are the hazards? Is the pin in a sucker location? Do you have a good angle where your mishits will leave you with a relatively straight forward next shot? Are you likely to be in trouble if you go for the pin and miss by a little? How is your distance control for the day? Do you have a good idea of how far each of your clubs

Ditto to all that, and then some.

There's no way you can choose one. I'm guessing those who are capable of choosing one aren't, in general, very low handicappers. The lower handicappers have learned when to be aggressive, when to lay off, etc. Depending on something as small (because it's really not that small a thing) as the weather, I might play a hole differently. Or the direction of the wind. Or how firm the ground is that day. Or what kind of match I'm playing, if any. Or literally what clothes I'm wearing (though that is usually due to temperature and thus weather). Or when the fairways were last cut, or whether they still have a little dew on them.

I can't really add anything new as just about everything has been touched on, but to me those two items dictate my shot-making more so than anything else.
