I was told that i'm better suited for midsize grips. Just wondering about those of you who upgraded from standard to midsize, how big of a difference did the proper grip size make in your overall game?

Thanks,
Tom

Most fitters would probably say that midsize was not the proper size for me, based on my build (5'10"/145#) and hand size (medium glove). But that's what I ended up being most comfortable and confident with. I even build up my putter grips about 1/8".

That being said, I probably picked up an average of 3-4 strokes per round once I dialed in the 'feel factor'. I know it's probably all a mental thing, but I believe that golf is about 90% mental anyway. I feel that I can more accurately sense where the clubhead is throughout the swing, and the few extra grams of weight at the butt of the club changeds the swingweight just enough to actually increas my clubhead speed just a bit. Can't remember the exacts, but it was around a 3-4 mph increase, based on a previos analisys for loft/lie adjustment.

I recently started using either mid or oversized grips. It simply makes it easier to hold onto the clubs, which allows for less grip pressure=better shots. I always had problems with too much grip pressure. And the phatter grips have helped me loosen up a smidge. I still have standard on my current irons though. . .I did regrip them all with Winn PCI hybrids--very nice.

I figured that a proper sized grip would help with consistency. Although swing plane is obviously the main culprit, a golf pro at Dick's mentioned that with proper sized grips, mishits could/would be less dramatic because your club face will go back to square more naturally. Makes sense to me.

So when you take your normal grip on your club and your fingers are able to touch your 'thumb pad,' this tends to be a sign that you need a larger grip size?

Obviously if it works don't change it, but I tried out midsize grips on a recommendation from a "pro" and it was a disaster. For me the larger grip made it harder to close the clubface at impact, and I spent three rounds and hundreds of balls on the range either spraying big fades off to the right of my targets or flicking through impact to get a draw ish flight. The larger grip can make a huge impact, in my experience.

After being properly fit I wound up with a "+1 wrap" grip size from Mizuno, which is basically the smallest increment above standard that is possible. But even with that change, I have noticed that I close standard grips a little more than "my" size, and it's a problem.

Grips are way sensitive, and standard to midsize is a pretty big change. Whether they're right for you or not, you will notice some initial tendency to hit balls right of target until you adjust. If that problem persists, the grip is too big.

If you're a lefty, you'll be missing left, by the way (duh).

How much bigger are midsize grips compared to standard? I'm forgetting now which size was recommended to me by the golf pro at the school i went to. It was a small increment. 1/32" or 1/16" i believe?

I think midsize is 1/8" over i believe. Not sure though, someone needs to verify

My glove size ranges between LARGE and XtraLARGE....usually a men's cadet XL in most gloves.

I've tried midsize grips in the past and the results weren't disastrous...but weren't to my liking either. I then tried standard corded grips with one extra tape layer and that seems to be the best combination for me.

I can pull off fades or draws.....slices and occasional hooks with these. The midsize grip made it harder to turn things over and work it right to left.

With my gloved left hand in position on the club my fingers can just touch my thumb heel pad.

In my experience hitting various shots with my friend's larger grips, it keeps my hands/wrists quieter and makes it a bit harder to release the club.

As many previous posters have said, changing grip can have a big effect.

I changed from standard to midsize + 2 wraps of tape. This stopped me hitting a huge and high draw as my normal shot, and now lets me hit a gentle draw with a nice midsize flight. It also allows me to have a more relaxed grip which helps me hit the ball a bit further.

I would try things out a bit before getting all your clubs changed though.

Also I wouldn't go on glove size. I wear a medium glove because my hands are long and skinny. Anything larger gets baggy, but as you can see I use pretty large grips.

I have BIG hands....And switched to Lamkin crossline Jumbo on my irons....made a huge difference...

I ended up using Lamkin/Michelin midsize +4 wraps on my woods and hybrids. I bought the Nike Sumo 2 hybrids and was hooking like a pro boxer.....switched out to the midsize +4 and now am hitting a mice straight to slight draw..... might have been a difference in keeping my hands a little more quiet plus lighter grip pressure....

Big Big difference for me....

Kind Regards,

Eric

it seems that the larger grip inhibits closing the club face unless you already have draw/hook tendency. Lately (past few months) my mishits have been hooks. However, on nicely connected shots, they draw. I should probably try out a larger grip size at the range before anything else.

When you guys say "midsize +(x)," what kind of increments in size are we talking about?

Thanks for the help

When they say "+(x)" they are referring to the number of wraps of tape underneath the grip. Each wrap of tape is about 1/64" so in my case the 2 wraps I have would be 1/32".

how much bigger is a midsize grip by itself? 1/8"?

The Golfpride DD2 midsize I use claims to be + 1/16.

IMHO... if the grips are too small for you the club can twist or even make you feel like you may want to grip them tighter. mid size grips can help to allow you to relax more with your swing and grip. another thing a mid size grip helps is in seniors for them too, it helps them to lessen cramp or aches and pains... one grip size does not fit all, its the same with shafts and there lengths too. we all are different and need different things to accommodate us and our game.

changing to a midsize feels better in your hands but if they are not your true grip size you can have problems releasing the club

you'll find yourself pushing balls right

    • Still working on getting to lead side. Tonight I also tried some skill work with clubface awareness.  Hit foam balls.
    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
