I have a question regarding pitching wedges.

I think of anything around 100 and in is a wedge shot... whether it is a full pitch or 10 yard flop. With that in mind wouldnt you want to keep wedge play consistant from club to club.

Most people purchase at least two of the following from the same maker (gap, sand, or lob) and get used to the feel to allow more consistancy in their game.

So my question is this: Why wouldnt you buy a 46* or 47* wedge to match your other wedges instead of the pitching wedge that comes with whatever iron set you use?

I know it is all personnal preference but has anyone ever given this any thought?

I actually lost the PW that came in my iron set (45 degree) and replaced it with a 48* Cleveland. I really like the SW and LW that came in the iron set but I may add a Cleveland 52* gap wedge so my 2 lower degree wedges are Cleveland and higher are Adams.

I noticed that the Cleveland was a lot heavier and almost returned it. I had the swing weight checked and it was only a D1/D2. They explained that the club feels heavier because it's forged whereas my irons are cast. I'm still getting used to the difference but it has a solid feel when you hit it square.

Depends on your natural yardage... if I'm standing 100 yards out thats a smooth gap wedge for me, full sand wedge... depends on the condition

I think its safe to say that better players tend to have longer yardages in their bag so a pitching wedge tends to fly 130-135 on a normal swing. My goal is to take a full swing, not 100% power but a swing with full rotation. Ideally I'm never looking to hit a 47 degree club 100 yards, I'd have to baby a high cut and thats a lot harder than my standard full swing with which I am very confident with

I hit my pitch over 120 but thats not the point. I use it for most all my pitch and run shots and the fact that it has different grooves than my other wedges makes it perform differently than I am used to. That is the basic point of the original post.

you could definately order the 47 degree to match your other wedges if feel is an issue.... in my case I wish my wedges felt as nice as my irons

IMO vokeys are clicky, but I've never even hit a forged wedge so I dont know if there is a considerable difference

I have a PW and GW the same as my irons, which are 1/2" longer. My SW and LW are standard length. I like this set-up as I tend to want to have a similar swing with the PW and GW as with my 8 and 9 iron. This does mean that there is a bit of a distance gap between my "full" GW and SW and I choose to fill that with a 3/4 GW rather than pushing a SW. I guess whatever you're most comfortable with is best.

Maybe i've had too much to drink tonight, but why don't manufacturers offer a lob wedge to match the iron set? A SW used to be included in most iron sets and still is in some.

Some companies do, PING offers 2-LW in all of their iron sets, except the S58/59

    • Still working on getting to lead side. Tonight I also tried some skill work with clubface awareness.  Hit foam balls.
    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
