I am a casual golfer hitting the course about once a month with plans to increase this number a bit. I have a set that is probably 20-30 years old that my dad picked up somewhere long ago. Now that I am playing more then once a year and thinking about rejoining the League at work I want something new.

I used my father-n-laws clubs last weekend $250 from costco and my brother-n-laws Callaway copy cats and noticed a HUGE difference. So now I cannot wait to get something of my own. Looking to spend between $150 and $300.

I noticed these and liked what I've read. http://www.tgw.com/customer/category...TEGORY_ID=9624

Any thoughts or tips on current deals?

You might also try callawaygolfpreowned.com lots of used callaway clubs as well as other name brands. Copies are okay to begin with but coming from experience a name brand club feels better and is more consistent. I went from playing Bertha copies to Cobras and could tell a huge difference. Adams clubs aren't bad, especially if you get a set that has hybrids instead of long irons.

I HIGHLY recommend the Golden Bear GX2 set, and it is cheap as well. Just go to your local Sports Authority and you should find them for $150 - bag and all. I didn't like the woods that much because the shaft flex was too weak for me, but the irons are very nice.

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to stop by a few shops on the way home from work and hold/swing some of the clubs you've mentioned. I am thinking it may be beneficial to get the GT tight lies irons and then piece together some drivers. What do you think about that. The irons can be had for not to much.

From what I've seen, I second the recommendation to go with "name brand" clubs over copies. For huge markdowns (or older clubs in my case) I've had great luck with http://www.rockbottomgolf.com . Good luck with your search!
Cleveland - HiBore XL (9.5* Fuji Fit-On Gold Stiff)
Bobby Jones/Jesse Ortiz - 3W & 21* H3 (Stock Stiff)
Ben Hogan - Apex FTX 4-FW (Apex 4 shafts)
TaylorMade - rac TP 56.12 satin & 60.6 black
Scotty Cameron - Mil-Spec Newport 2 (33" standard)

I'll keep on eye on the marketplace for sure. Thanks for pointing those out.

I am seriously considering getting the irons and then piecing together some drivers and wedges. What's the consensus on this? I noticed lots of people have a mix in their bags...

$119 for the tight lies sounds pretty good to me.

Dicks Sporting Goods is running a sale on cleveland wedges... 2 for 100... I think it runs through this weekend. You cant go wrong with a cleveland wedge.

Your original idea of buying the tour edge irons i think is a good one. Tour edge doesnt have the marketing money that a titleist or callaway has but from what I have experienced their clubs are top notch.

Found a 20% off coupon and free shipping so I went with the Golden Bear. They were the cheapest so I can always upgrade again if I feel the need and wont feel as bad about not keeping the "starters" long.

Plus I have money left over to blow on new Motorcycle gear!

Oh, Thanks for all the help and advice. Now I just gotta learn how to swing!

The GX2 set?

As I said, irons are very nice and forgiving, but the woods' shafts seem a little weak, you might want to upgrade those.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
