I bought a scotty cameron circa 62 #2 putter with the black oxide finish recently. I played a couple and a few practice sessions, and immediately after the first round, some rust began to appear on the sole as well as the face and even a little on the hosel.

When i bought the putter, it didnt with the silicon cloth, and i just received one from another source today. So i'll be wiping down the putter now.

However, there is a little bit of rust on it...and although it doesnt really look that bad (i can put up pictures later....at work now) i wouldnt mind getting it off.

Anyone else have black oxide finish on their putter or have any idea how to get rid of the rust?

what you need to do is wipe it down with baby oil to preserve it.
i had the tiger woods putter and got a tiny bit of rust, very little. i stopped playing with it because it is worth a lot of money. anywayz if you play if its raining dont put it back in the head cover. the moisture in the head cover is going to promote rust. so after your round just leave it out, but oil it down with baby oil.
glad i can help. +1 my rep please

Hmm..is it black oxide or gun blue?

I WOULD NOT use baby-oil and instead HIGHLY recommend SILICONE SPRAY. I've been SC's for a bit and that's what we all use on the gun black finish. BO finish sounds aftermarket..

I have a TEI3... baby oil doesnt do crap

you need a silicone spary lubricant but it needs to be a very specific one, anything that is oil based (if it smells oily, like wd40 then DONT use it)

an oil based lube will actually adhere chemicals (ie fertilizers) from greens that will ruin your putter with putter rust

here is a great product - use it - its an electrical and food based grade lubricant that is perfect for putter care

this is the only product you should use

Hmm..is it black oxide or gun blue?

with the rust coming that quickly its definitely the stock gun blue finish...

its hard to keep this putter in great condition, hence the reason they made the series one year later in the charcoal finish but the gun blue is just more attractive than the charcoal use the product I mentioned above and this will be a gamer that will last for years to come

  • 2 months later...
i'm bringing up this old thread because i just got my putter back the other day from getting refinished with S.Cameron. it ended up taking about 2.5 months to get back.

anyways, i'm thinking about getting that silicone spray mentioned above but not really sure what to do with it.

anyone have any links or maybe more detailed explanation about how to care for that black oxide finish?

the people at SC aren't very helpful. They simply suggest to wipe it down after each round but that doesn't seem to do the trick.

I remember finding a link awhile ago explaining the whole maintenance process but i can't seem to find anything similar online now.

any thoughts?

Heres what ive always done with my circa,

i put the cloth in the headcover, that way it always gets "wiped down" whenever i put it away, i also wipe it down when iget home if its been a rainy day. i have never seen any forms of rust on either of my circas.

you need a silicone lubricant, as mentioned before never use WD40.

one nice trick is to apply lubricant into the headcover so you'll constantly lube up the putter each time it is covered.

yes, unfortunately you would need to treat the wedge as soon as you buy it

something I failed to do

whenever you play with the wedge, go home... warm water and soap, clean and dry completely

spray with the silicone spray and leave out of your bag
