Back when I was a golf novice (idiot) I bought myself all new woods because the hand-me-downs I had been playing were small, old, and embarrassing amongst my playing partners newer equipment. I went ahead and bought a driver, 3 wood, and 5 hybrid at this time. My thinking was that all golfers carried a driver, 3, and 5, but that 3 and 5 woods were interchangable with 3 and 5 hybrids (dumb). All of these clubs had "Regular" shaft flexes.

Fast forward to the present. All new additions to my bag have been "stiff" shaft flexes. The 4 iron is my favorite club, I use it a lot and on all second shots on par 5s. However, I wanted a club I could get a little more distance with and use off the tee in occasion, and the stupid 5 hybrid did not serve this purpose because it was either shorter or equal in distance to my 4 iron. I just got a Cobra DWS Baffler to serve this purpose, and my first few times practicing with it it has been perfect. It is stiff flex.

I thought my bag was complete, but that brings me back to my 3 wood. I push this club every single shot. I slow my swing down, smooth my tempo, choke down a bit, but cannot NOT push. It also has a slight fade at the very end, but is always solid contact.

So finally my question. Without seeing my swing does it sound like I can't hit the 3 wood because it has a regular shaft flex? Or do I just have issues with the 3 wood in general? I'm confused and really don't feel like buying another new club (can't afford it). O and I should add that I currently can't hit my driver (stiff) to save my life, but every other club is really good.

Sounds like it more your swing that the regular flex 3 wood.

Push shots:

1) Are you standing too far from the ball?
a) try keeping your hand about an open hand distance from your body.

2) Are you making a full turn with your shoulder and hips
a) try swing with your feet together as a drill before you hit your shots and slow down your backswing and try not to hit every shot so hard, try swinging smoothly at 70%

3) Are you turning and not swaying?
a) try keeping your right elbow against your body on the take away, this will help make your swing more compact and turn around your body and not sway.

good luck and don't be afraid to hit all your clubs in the bag. especially your driver and 3 woods.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know it cannot be #1 because I was standing identical distance away from my hybrid, which I was hitting very well. #2 and #3 are definite possibilities, though. I will try those out for sure.

Hey there,

I know this is an old thread but I'm just wondering if you figured out the problem? I'm experiencing the exact same thing where I'm always pushing my 3W and my recently bought 3H. I just can't seem to figure it out. I've tried moving the ball forward in my stance, changing my swing angle and nothing seems to work. I feel like I'm hitting the ball solidly but it just squirts out to the right. What I really don't understand is you would think my 4 iron would give me somewhat similar results but it doesn't. My 4 iron either goes dead straight or has a draw. Any advice on why I can't hit those two clubs???

    • This is my second year playing golf, I started last season but have always struggled with a slice. I've tried multiple things to try and fix the slice: Closing the face. Rotating my right hand out or clockwise in the grip. Keeping the club head low in my back swing. Focusing on a straight swing path. Trying the straighter arms like Bryson D. (as seen in the videos above) Trying to not let me hips get too far ahead of my down swing. Trying to keep my shoulders down until after I've made contact with the ball. Etc. I recently changed to the straighter arms which has helped me adjust away from such a drastic slice. So it has helped a bit. Before that, I was trying to keep the club head low in the back swing and this was the most helpful in correcting the slice, however it drastically removed power and distance in the strikes and would even sometimes result in a hook. About a couple months ago I had a single lesson with my driver and learned some helpful things, but have since struggled to perform what I learned well. One of the things in the lesson was to keep my shoulder down more in the the down swing until after making contact with the ball. This would help the slice a bit, sometimes drawing the ball. To even it out, I was instructed to rotate my hips a bit earlier in the down swing. What I have noticed however with the earlier hip rotation is that it's really hurting my lower back a lot. Since backing off on that it's helped not injure my low back as much. I believe my main issue might possibly be the swing path, being a Pull Slice.   See above, was mid typing when you posted. I have never watched Moe Norman's swing to be honest. I have never measure my hip rotation, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that after you read about my hip rotation / back pain issue.
