Putting Grip - Index finger down or not?

while putting (right-handed), is it better to have your right index finger down the side of the shaft or wrap it around the grip? I have seen both methods recommended in instruction books as the "standard" putting grip. I tried both and neither seems to be that much better than the other. Which should I stick with?

Does anyone have a good diagram of the "standard putting grip?

I saw Retief Goosen putting with both index fingers pointing down this weekend at the open.

I play with my finger around the grip, make sure your grip pressure is light. Try both and see which you make more putts from 3 feet and from 10 feet.

It must work because so many players extend the right index finger down the putter grip.

For me, I worry that the tendency would be to push the putter with that finger.

Current grip on the putter for me is a Varden (sp?) grip with pinky and ring overlapping my left hand. Makes for a nice '1-piece' and compact grip.

There are a lot of different ways to grip your putter - i changed from left hand low to left hand up within a couple of days and i was suprised how easy the change was - now i dont even care anymore for ONE putting grip - i just grip my putter the way i feel comfortable with - sometimes i even catch myself having the left hand low again...
