One thing people always mention when they discuss player's irons is the "smooth feel". WHile I can understand the value of a gain in workability, why does a smooth feel do anything. Isn't what matters where the ball goes? Also people ***** about the thick topline of a GI iron. Why does this bother people?

Feel is pretty hard to define but I think it's just a sort of a positive reinforcement. When you hit a "player's iron" right you know if it was a good shot just by the contact. Again, it's hard to describe but hitting a shot that you know is good before you even look up is what makes the game great. "Player's irons" just amplify the feel of good shot.

Thick toplines just look hideous imo. It's really just personal preference.

A thick topline makes me think of game improvement clubs so it just makes me think, "You loser you need a thick club to be good"

It's just anti-confidence with me.

Now with feel, i can't really say. However, i demo'd a set of mizuno mx-19's. They aren't forged but they still do feel great swinging them. I found that when you did hit the ball good, you could just feel it and it gives me a smile anytime i did it.

A thick top line bothers me because it doesn't look visually appeasing at address. It makes it seem as if it's hard to hit. I love the setup of wedges(especially Vokey's).

Sure, the most important thing is where the ball goes. But, why use a club that doesn't feel the way you like when you could use one that feels good to you?

Also people ***** about the thick topline of a GI iron. Why does this bother people?

It bothers me for 2 reasons:

1) A thick topline usually hides a large, undercut cavity and wide sole. I don't have trouble getting the ball in the air, so all this does is make it more difficult to control trajectory than I like. 2) I think it looks clunky and ugly. I don't see any reason to use clubs that I find visually unappealing when there are plenty out there that fit my eye. Like all other golf equipment, it just comes down to personal preference.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
